When it comes to subwoofers, timbrematching is irrelevant right? Just making sure I got this straight.

I have the Klipsch KSW-10 subwoofer and I'm looking to upgrade. The rest of my speakers are Klipsch as well... RB-51 fronts, RC-52 center, and RS-42 surrounds.

To accompany my current speakers, what's the best subwoofer I can get for $500?

Take a look at the offerings from HSU and SVS. Great subs.

Yes timber matching is not an issue in the lower frequencies. ;)

Type in "Subwoofer $500" in the advance search function and only select the "Subwoofers" section. It will bring up a bunch of recommendations.

I agree! Alot of bang for the buck! Both those companies make great subs. Their entry lvl subs will blow away your Klipsch sub! :D

Store brands to consider are Martin Logan and Velodyne. Both have good subwoofers in the $500 range. HSU and SVS are a good route to go if buying online. Some stores (very limited) carry HSU and you may be able to find them and give them a listen.

Timber = wood. Timbre = sound. :) Matching the wood can be a good thing. Matching the sound even better, but since timbre would mainly deal with getting the sound of each speaker to be the same, you should not have an overlap between your speakers and the sub so timbre matching is not an issue.
