THX certification seems to have gone by the wayside. No longer important?

Imagine if there was such a standard which requires that all cars are must have fuel economy of (lets say) 15 miles/gal... and what you'd have to pay to have this standard listed in the specs...
Now, Do you expect many companies would jump on that now a days?

I don't know. Does that mean that most AVR's pass muster?

usually more than just pass and in most cases the THX Cert fee deemed "unnecessary" at the lower price models

I can understand not putting it on the low end of the line. I view the Denon 4520 as a higher end AVR as well as the Aventage series from Yamaha. Those aren't THX certified. Pioneer has a few Elite models with the certification but it is a fairly rare "feature" these days. I guess the marketplace changes over time.

Companies like Integra 40.x and above series and Onkyo still have THX along with some higher end like Anthem still have it, though Anthem has had very little change over time. I have it on my 80.3, don't have it on my 30.5, and it matters little to me either way. I don't necessarily think it is a high end feature as companies like Bryston don't have it, or need it for that matter :)

Just because they are not THX certified does not mean that they cannot deliver on the THX performance spec. I applaud Yamaha for passing the savings on to the consumers for not having THX certification. :)

I could care less about THX certification on a processor.
I have connected the Oppo BDP-105 directly to my amps and it sound fantastic and they are running out of logo space on the front and back panels. :p

On an AVR, i suppose it may give confidence in the amplifier but I would still check out the reviews, just in case ;)

I just asked because when I bought my receiver years ago, the dealer (a personal friend) talked me into spending more money to get the THX certified mode. He said it has stronger amplifiers than the lesser models. No longer a big deal. Got it. Thanks.

I wonder if the new Oppo's are meant to drive amplifiers. I know the 93/95 weren't and I'm guessing that if the volume control is still digital, then the new one's technically aren't either.

It is not something that Oppo specifically recommends but many have done it.
Oppo recommends 45K ohms minimum input impedance on the amp to avoid over driving the opamps.

The 105 Sabre DACs have a very good digital volume control.
The downside is it is very easy to set the volume at 100% firmware upgrades, resets, and messing in the volume setup.
Extra care is required ;)

I have been pushing some tweaks to the firmware to be more preamp friendly but I am doubtful that these will be implemented because it represents such a small fraction of the customer base.

My brother-in-law connects the BDP-105 XLR outputs to two Outlaw M2200 mono-blocks driving his B&W CM8 (I think) speakers.
The system sound very good. Much better than his PR-SC25. It is more dynamic and we did not get much higher than 70% on the volume control.

I have a THX certification on my 809 and never use it. No need. Sounds great without it.

THX is unnecessary, but still cool. :D

I bet a custom HT room equipped w/ all THX Ultra2 speakers, subs, AVR, & projector would be very cool. And then put a blue neon THX sign above the entrance of the room.

I have a THX logo on my amp, so there :p :)

My Onkyo 709 was THX certified, and it shipped with a glaring issue in the gray scale when the video setting "Through" was selected. It turned gray scale into brown scale. Onkyo did fix it in a firmware update, but it never made me feel warm and fuzzy that such an obvious defect was allowed to be shipped under the certification of the THX logo painted on the front..........It's all a moot point now, as after all, it was an Onkyo product and died on me after 14 months. I personally will never think twice again about the over hyped THX logo.

I have movies with a THX logo. Does that count?

I'm going to have to find some THX stickers and stick them on my 4 ATI amps and ADCOM speaker selectors.
