Thumps on shut down (newbie amp questions)

Hi, I am new to the amp/pre-amp world and am looking to power my speakers with a Carver TFM-45. It is for a 2.1 system in the masterbedroom.

The guy selling it said the following: "The only problem it ever had (and still has) is that is thumps the speakers when the power is turned off."

My question is: Can this/will this cause damage to the speakers?

Also, I am using my Denon AVR-2500 as the pre-amp. Is this doing a disservce to the amp's "clean power"?

Thanks for the insights.

Thumps are usually caused by the order in which the components power up/down. On power up you want the receiver/pre-amp to turn on before the amp so that there is a signal present when the amp turns on and starts amplifying (otherwise it will amplify noise). You want the opposite for shutdown - turn the receiver/pre-amp off first and then the amp.

Many people will program on/off macros into a universal remote or use a power bar with delayed turn on or programmable startup to do it.

I'm not sure if your pre/pro and amp have the ability to use the 12V triggers but it guaranties the items will be started in the right sequence.

Thks for the reply, but shouldn't..

you being testing those Behringers yet??!!!!
Eager to hear your findings.

I'll also infer that it shouldn't cause speaker damage (if I can't get the sequence right with the remote). I am switching to a vastly more costly pair of speakers and don't want to cause any issues.

All the old Carver amps do it. I've had mine hooked up to the same speakers for 15 years, no problem.

I too have 2 ea. Carver M-1.0t and 1 ea. TFM-24 amps that thump with on/off. I used them from 1989 to 2005 and never harmed a speaker. I still have them and us them in a rotation mode in a spare bedroom/computer room. I rotate them bi-monthly to exercise the capacitors. I now use an Outlaw Audio Model 770 in my living room.
I have always have turned the volume all the way down prior to shutting down any audio gear.;)

Nice equipment .
I read on the Carver forum , that the M 1.0T's are known to do that thump thing . I didnt know the the TFM-24 did that also .
I have a Bryston 4b that thumps abit , but my TFM-35 there is no nothing turning it off , just a click from the button .
Im not a expert with the Carver Amps , maybe they are known to do it .

The TFM-24 may not thump. I wouldn't know because I ran the M-1.0ts in bridged mono to my front speakers and the TFM-24 in stereo to two rear speakers. So, the thump was probably just the M-1.0ts. They are very good amps though in my opinion, powerfull as hell!

I have and use the CT-7 pre-amp also. It's a very good pre-amp and the TFM-35 is an awesome combinition.
Congtats:)
