Looking for a 7.2 reciever and stuck between a denon avrx3400h or onkyo txnr676 receiver, will add amps later on the line and only want setup 100% for movies, would like a dolby atmos setup too. The onkyo is 399 and denon is on sale for 497 at my local frys, was wondering if the denon is too good to be true or is the reciever not that great? Thoughts? Im also a noob, this will be my first home theater, thanks

If you want to add external amps the Denon has a full set of pre-outs to do so with, the Onkyo doesn't (only has sub pre-out and zone 2 pre-out). I'd prefer the Denon's AudysseyXT32/SubEQ feature to AccuEQ, too.

Ok what I do as a rule of thumb when checking out Receivers when I am Bored now a days is try and pick it up ? Does it have any weight ? Peek in side vents can you see amp ? Is Amp beefy looking Is Amp Heavy ? heavy and beefy means lota good juice that can take full throttle . Most now a days fail this test if not all the ones at Best Buy. Research the hell out of your choices and go for the heavier one if you can pick it up and touch it. look at build quality . Speaker connections and that kinda stuff. Brand names change ownership so much now a days they have little meaning to me . And Numbers get Fluffed beyond reality .

Definitely grab the X3400.

I think the Denon X3400 sounds as good as the Denon AVP-A1HDCI and all other Pre-Pros regardless of price.

Note that the 3400 is outsourced by Denon and manufactured in Vietnam by subcontractor Inkel Corp, who also owns the Sherwood brand... The 3400 has great specs and features, wherever U decide to buy it make sure to double check its warranty and return policies closely...

Just my $0.02... ;)

What about the Onkyo?

Onkyo 676 is built by Onkyo in their Malaysia factory. The 676 has solid specs and features and now discounted about $100 below the 3400. Both the 676 and 3400 are outstanding values, but being familiar with both factories my preference is the 676. In the end the shopper should do a close feature/spec comparison and then decide which product best addresses his expectations...

He says he wants external amps so looks like he has to look above the 676 level for a model with pre-outs....
