Damn cold in the midwest. Schools cancelled today and tomorrow. Dropped the kids off at grandma's since school closed but not work. When that wind hit the micro-thin dress slacks per the dress code, I thought important limbs were going to climb back up inside. So I'm cruising along, making good time in the left lane of the freeway. I'm passing a car that was in the middle lane. Suddenly I see a flash of a silver car with it's nose pointed at me. WHAM!! It T'd me in the right front and slammed me into the concrete barrier. So now the left side is up on the barrier and I'm just trying to keep it out of traffic with no steering control, and no brakes because the front is all messed up and the median still has 2 inches of snow.

I'm a bit sore, the car is a mess, and I'm stuck waiting for the friggin' insurance company to call. Can't do jack diddly until they call back. Worst part, those were friggin new tires on the car!! $850 in tires all messed up. I did get the left front tire back. It had snapped off on impact with the concrete barrier and did a slow roll until it hit the drievr's side passenger door...just like in the movies.

Sigh...new frigging tires!! What a waste of money.

Glad you made it through (basically) unscathed.

I'm always surprised at how many don't know how to drive in inclement weather and slightly gratified to know they are not all here in the northeast.

+1 Glad to know you are cursing about this, and nothing worse.

I lived in Alaska for two years, and learned to drive in snow. You'd think that would give me confidence to drive in the winter around here, but I am terrified of the other drivers.

That sucks.
Glad to hear that you had no injuries, and on the bright side, your kids weren't in the car at the time.

I feel your pain. About eight years ago my wife totaled her car. Sliding in snow during her 15 minute commute, of all things.
Thankfully no injuries.
Also new tires, etc.

Glad you are cussing and not dead. This is why I stay out of ice and snow.

I'll see if I can post pictures. The pictures I have don't make it seem that bad. But looking at the front facia, left and right quarter panels, hood damage, suspension parts for left & right, steering parts, new wheels & tires for the front both sides, possible damage to the transmission, damage to the suspension mounts, etc. I will probably be totaled since it has/had 119,567 miles on it.

But it was paid for. I was going to run it into the ground. Didn't want to pay for anything newer. I'd like one of those new Ram 1500 pickups with the 3.0L diesel...but they aren't making them available in the US yet. Since they can't get them made, they are going to lose a sale. Now I have to find something to buy that works for my needs and gets decent fuel mileage. Ugh...bad timing for that.

Glad you're OK. I'm in the middle of an insurance claim right now. Some missus tried to park in the spot beside mine. Trouble was, that spot was half covered by a 2' foot high snowbank. So, she ended up scraping the paint on my front bumper. She was honest enough to leave a note, but when I got the repair estimate ($800), she started to backpedal a bit. "Maybe I was mistaken and didn't actually hit your truck and the damage was already there". I said fine, if you don't want to pay for it out of pocket, please give me your insurance info. I feel a little badly that her insurance premiums may take a hit, since she left the note. However, she didn't want to play ball, so what choice do I have?

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread. At least you don't appear to be at fault here, so that's something I suppose...

Cleaned the old car out of all of my stuff yesterday. That was fun in the -27 wind chills. Want entertainment? Watch someone put on carhart bibs in the front seat of a rental Hyundai. But the hassle was worth not freezing my vitals off while cleaning out the car. I had planned on the scoop method of just throwing stuff into bags. I didn't realize how much garbage my kids had accumulated in their section of the car. I filled a garbage bag of just garbage! I have been too negligent in not having them remove what they took in. New plan!

As for new wheels, looking at Dodge Durango and Journey, Ford Explorer, Flex, and F150. May swap out the boss's ride as well depending on how things go. She really wants a heated steering wheel with this rough winter we have been having.

Good to hear you are okay. I was all set to jump on board with this topic as a pothole took out one of my 6 month old $300 tires a week ago, but never the heck mind. You just be happy you are up and walking at all and hopefully insurance will cover getting you a suitable replacement with low (no?) out of pocket costs. Just the headache of dealing with it all.

Stay safe out there people!

It's been insanely cold down here. We have been in the teens several times and we don't have the clothes to really handle that sort of weather like they do up north. A heated steering wheel sounds like heaven. The Super Bowl picked the wrong winter to go up north IMO.
