thinking of upgrading from a svs sbs-01 to axiom or onix, NEED ADVICE

Hey, I wanted all you audioholics feedback on what I should do, Or just give me some tips.

I have been using the svs sbs-01 speakers for a while and they sound decent but have not really tested to much surround sound material on them yet, but have tested some multi-channel music, alhtough not dolby and dts movies as yet althouhg I can do that.

I have read that the svs-01 speakers are very good for their price, but that the axiom speakers have a somewhat better quality. I have also heard that the axiom speakers are bit bright however. My current setup is 7 bookshelfs and 16-46 pc plus subwoofer used with a high quality sound card and nearfield listetning a 2-3 feet away from the speakers.

RBH sound seems to be interesting but I amm turned off by them because I dont feel like calling them and they dont even list dealers on their website. After 20 or so years in business they should have a reasonable excuse for not doing so.

A good question is that rbh sound uses 6.5 woofers in inches compared to many comapneis taht use 5.25 woofers. Some companies like axiom use 6.25 woofers in their m3 speakers and their full range speakers- though as a subwoofer. I know bigger woofers created longer output- and higher frequneces, by longer meaning a wider soundfield.

my svs-01 speakers just have a 5.25 polypropheline cone, or however you spell it and a 1 inch 25mm tweeter. THe center has 2 woofers of the same type and a single tweeter. Go too www.svsound.com it is a popular system.

How do I know what speakers to get in terms of do I need multiple tweeters and woofers, I am interested inn axiom's floorstanding speakers because of the price and quality ratio, onix's speakers seem to be very exepsnieve although they make budget items, axiom seems to win out.

Thoughts appreciated.Any other companies that have reasonable proices such as axiom.

So your listening position is going to be 2-3 feet away from the speakers? What are you looking for in a speaker (aesthetics, accuracy, loudness, etc.)? What kind of budget do you have to work with?

Unfortunately the only way to know what the best speaker is for is for you is to audition them. Some folks avoid ID companies for this reason. How any given speaker is going to sound in your house with your room acoustics is hard to predict. All the ID companies have liberal return policies. There is another poster on Audioholics who ordered a bunch of Axioms to test at home and going through that right now. If I was going ID, I have a warm fuzzy feeling for Ascend. But who knows, I might hate them once they got here.

maybe up to $1,500-$2,000

Since I already have a fantastic subwoofer, I may just replace the bookshelfs with a couple floorstanding models and some surround speakers.

Onix speakers seem great and I know a friend who use to DJ and had one of them, but it seems a bit expensive. I am looking at the m80's from axiom which are only $1,200 a pair are seem just a great as the best onix rockets for stereo.

The problem is that my rx-v2600 receiver doesnt drive 4ohms well but next your I might get a denon receiver to use the dolby trueHD and dts HD codecs, as well as newer hdmi and 1080p support.

Thoughts apprecaited.

I really think the only way to do this is to compare in your home. I recommend ordering both the Axiom m80 and Onix Rockets you are interested in. The general consensus is that they are both very good speakers and it is going to be up to you to decide which ones you like better.

Sounds like you have a bad case of..

upgraditis!

First its speakers, then you speak of recievers changes. On top of it you mention you haven't even thoroughly tested the svs!

I know about upgraditis, because I am suffering from it too. Why do you give yourself a few month to bang away on the svs stuff, adjust placement, toe-in, etc. Spend the money and time on enjoying what u have for a while, ie 3-6 months, playing new source material and see if a change is still required.

This audio obsession is supposed to bring joy not angst.

Happy listening

The X series speakers series sound good in nearfield. Rockets do not and therefore refs. wouldnt either because of the same tweeter.

If I am listening to music and playing on the pc i am probably 2' diagonally from one of my X-CS and it is very bearable even at high volume.

Just because they use the same tweeter does not mean they will sound or act the same.

Nearfield listening is about how well the drivers integrate by the time the sound reaches the listening position. The larger and the more drivers, the more space/distance the speaker will need for the drivers to integrate. The Ref1's should do as well, in terms of nearfield, as the X-LS by virtue of their size.

By majority of what I have read, the Ref1's are on the bright side of neutral and the X-LS are the warm side.
