Thinking about getting New Receiver

Hello all. I was thinking about possibly getting a new receiver, but it partially depends on a few monetary things coming up in the next month or so. I am already purchasing either a HSU or SVS sub and am debating whether to get a new receiver as well.

My current setup is Polk Tsi200 as fronts, Polk Cs2 as center and then either the HSU or SVS as the sub (haven't decided yet).

Currently I have the receiver that comes as part of the Onkyo 6200 HTIB and am satisfied with it but don't like a couple of things about it. The main thing I don't like is it doesn't show the volume in decibles but instead from 0-70. The other thing is that it is an entry level receiver and does not have some of the cooler, new features other ones do.

A local audio store offered me a total of $225 for my entire Onkyo 6200 system so I would prefer to go there because other than the receiver the other stuff is collecting dust. The owner mentioned how he is having some trouble moving Marantz in and out of the stores and said he would give me a good deal on one. I can't remember 100% the model numbers but I want to say one is the SR5005 and the other the SR6004. He also carries Denon, Pioneer and Yamaha.

The main features I want are some of the networking capabilities (but that isn't a huge issue) and another slot for a 2nd subwoofer. My question is to obtain both of these things am I going to be able to stay within the $500ish (before the $225 for the Onkyo stuff I have) price range. My thinking is no. The main thing I am looking for is a receiver that produces nice sound that also has another slot for a 2nd subwoofer.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Your existing receiver isn't bad and is roughly equivalent to their older TX-SR606/607 series of stand alone receivers. That's the advantage Onkyo HTIBs have over most other brands - they include decent receivers in their HTIB packages. There are two ways to accomplish what you're trying to do. The first is to spend $500 or so on a new receiver and the second is to build on what you already own. The subwoofer is easy, just buy a subwoofer Y-cable/splitter for $1.50. Having the splitter inside the receiver vs outside the receiver buys you nothing at the $500 price point because the subwoofer jacks are not independently controlled. For now that seems to be a feature that's reserved for high-end models.

Networking features are often better done outside the receiver. There are any number of add on devices like the Western Digital TV Live that do more for less than $100. There are lots of options depending on what features you are looking for and in my case I use the combination of a Roku 2 XS and a Netgear NeoTV550 for internet/network media. If you just need more HDMI connections that's easily solved with an HDMI switch.

What does make upgrading worthwhile is if you want a newer flavor of room correction in the receiver or you need 3D support. At the $500 price point the two that I'm familier with are the Denon AVR-1912 (brand new only) or a refurbished Onkyo TX-NR709.

I have seen the Onkyo 370 at times for 499. That is a great receiver for the money.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Unfortunately my local store doesn't carry Onkyo and since I can get $225 for my old unused gear I'd like to go there to keep the cost down. I have heard that Marantz have great amps and produce the best sound? Any truth to this?

What models should I be looking at between Marantz Denon Yamaha and Pioneer? Sound quality is the 1st thing I am looking for.

With sound processing and room correction turned of they all sound pretty much the same. Where you start hearing differences is with room correction turned on. Denon, Onkyo, and Marantz all use versions of Audyssey room correction while Yamaha uses their own system called YPAO and Pioneer uses their own MCACC system. Even within brands there are different versions depending the price point but they all do the same things in slightly different ways. As for which is best that's a matter of personal taste.
