 what's the thickest speaker wire that fits common speaker binding posts? (what gauge)

I would think 12 gauge is the thickest that would easily fit in standard binding posts and even that is overkill unless you have very long runs.

thanks MDS. was imagining at least an 8 ... thought it would have looked nice.

I don't know Mike. When I was much younger and not very knowledgeable about audio, I bought 10 gauge wire. That stuff is so thick and unwieldy it is almost impossible to work with (and of course for the lengths I was using it didn't make one bit of difference to the sound compared to 16 gauge wire).

I agree about the sound difference, only considering the "looks" part. but if you say 10 gauge is hard to work with ... I'll skip it.

I do have lots of 14 gauge lying around, and the longest run I have is 5-7 feet.

you're right, the 14 gauge I have could barely go through ... 10 gauge max maybe. oh well. I'll bi-wire instead :)

Haven't you ever seen these cable companies with HUGE cable then they put pin connectors on the ends.

Heck Mike, run some number 4/0 wire with pin connectors ;)

Now I know what to do with all the service entrance cable I have left over from my panel relo project. :p

If you just want looks, why not just get some tech flex? Large AWG wire really doesn't buy you anything in the typical system.

"Common" binding posts is a pretty open statement...

I have some that wont accept regular spades, some that wont take a bare wire larger then around 14-16 gauge, some that will take bare wire up to like 8-10 gauge. It really depends on the equipment.
