the difference with monster is the price. just hooked up my 50 inch panny plasma, dvd player, hd cable box, and surround system with monoprice cables. WOW the price difference is hugh and quality is just as good. connectors are great and the wires just as good. thank you to all that pointed me in the monoprice direction. monoprice is the only place that I will be buying from now on.

i also bought mono price cables, the 24awg, best $17 ive spent on cables yet. anyone know why audioholics prefers dvigear?? what makes dvigear cables better? i looked at their site & the only thing i saw was that dvigears were 22awg & mono's were 24awg, i thought that only made a difference on long runs (25-50ft), any other difference? i was also looking at their hdmi switchers, $80 vs $250. i thought the stuff inside was pretty much the same stuff as what computers have been using for years??? what makes dvigear better?

I agree that Monster cables do seem to be over-priced. I have never heard of mono cables. A lot of people also like Blue Jeans cables too because of their no frills approach to cables. I also been interested in trying some Signal Cables as their prices seem reasonable and high quality to boot.

I think I made a mistake

I just purchased a new DLP, DVD player (79AVi) from BB who highly recommended the Monster Cable HDMI M Series at $167.

They said the top of the line Monster cable is recommended since I went with the high end DVD player.

Besides the very nice packaging it came in, is there anything, visually speaking, that justifies the price? I haven't taken it out of the package so it will most likely go back.

My first post, very informative site.

If by 'visually speaking' you mean the appearance of the cable then yes they are somewhat pretty and some people might pay a premium for the looks. If you mean the visual appearance of the image your TV will display, then no there is nothing to justify the high price - it will be no better than a lower priced alternative.

Thank you very much for the information. I'll be returning the Monster cable tonight and placing an order with monoprice or blue jeans. At their prices I can rewire my entire system and then some.

Hey Jake,

For your piece of mind: I've been dealing with Bluejeans cables for about 2 years now, they're great, inexpensive, you get more than what you pay for, really excellent quality and customer service, their cables are in my stereo, HT, office, kitchen, and I can recommend them highly.

Ditto here for Blue Jeans cables. If you call their number, you get an honest-to-goodness human being who speaks English and knows what he's talking about. Sadly, this is pretty rare these days. Maybe someday Monster will wake up and smell the coffee...but don't hold your breath

I listen with my mouth open...
Yesterday my DVD player craps out so I go get a new one. Searched out and picked a Sony DVP-NS75H which is HDMI out, not DVI like my TV needs.

No big deal, I get a connector and be set. Any way I go to CC because they have this player on sale and then add in a rebate to it all. Order online and the only connector they have is a MONSTER at $36, kinda stuck, but OK. So I pick it up and they didnt have the connector in the warehouse section so that means I get $24 gift card per their pledge. Cool $24 against that $36 now and in the store they have one, but at $42 and the salesman is pushing hard the cable with it built in for $129. $129 I tell him is more than the fking DVD player, you nuts, so he says well the player dont have a cable, so add in the cable and that piece and you got over $129. Not if I dont buy it here I dont, so of to Wally Mart I go. Wally Mart has a DVI/HDMI cable for less than a HDMI cable to begin with, why?? So I get this HDMI/DVI cable, gold plated ends, quad shielding etc just like a monster one for $32, its a Phillips.

I take the connector back to CC and that sales guy makes a suggestion that I screwed up and really needed his $129 cable, laughing rudely. I go out to the truck and bring in the Phillips cable and pick out some movies for the store credit I got and go to that sale man. See this cable, same as your Monster and I'll prove it right now on any player you got hooked up (as people are now watching me get rude with interest) to show you no difference other than price. He says no, thats OK, why I said, you know I'm right. I got this cable and 4 movies to enjoy for less than the MONSTER ONE and I say thats a MONSTER OF A DEAL and walk out!!!!!

The fact is that Monster makes great cables. Plug 'em in and you're in for a ride! I mean, you got nice quality cables there. But I can't seem to understand the reason for these high prices. It's like selling a toyota Corolla (which is a decent car) for the price of a Lexus!!

Like fredejo said, people are starting to see the truth behind these ridiculous prices!!

Great analogie!

Many people get so irritated with the ridiculous prices charged for Monster cable that they overlook the fact that it is still a well made product. The only thing they should feel embarrassed about is getting suckered by some slimy or underinformed salesperson. There is no reason to pay more for your interconnects than you did for your equipment.

On the other hand, you gotta give Monster an A+ for marketing, their people definately earned their pay.:D
