Theather setup advice.

Hi all, I am planning on purchasing a decent HT for my place and had these components in mind. I was planning on getting the denon 3805 or 2805, but what is the difference between the two and which one should I get? For speakers, I like small cube style speakers and was going to opt for the Bose Acoustimas 15. Is there any other speakers like this that sounds better? I've listened to everything, I just don't have the ear to notice the slight differences.

How's that look for a setup? I would appreciate any recommendations or comments.

BTW, this will be used for music & movies.

Thanks.

I'm not sure exactly what your question is, but you can't go wrong buying what you like.

The Denons you're looking at are very similar, with one having a nudge more power than the other. I'd say they're both overkill for the Bose acoustimass system since the cubes aren't hard to drive and the acoustimass subwoofer is self-powered. You can get a MUCH less expensive amp, say in the $300 - $400 range.

Bose is marketing hype! There is a reason you can't telling any difference Bose is no better than any other home theater in a box. You really can't defeat the laws of physics. Either one of those receivers is likely overkill for a small cube system.

the main advantages of the 3805 over the 2805 are a third powered room and the Denon-link, which is a single-wire connection good for some multichannel audio. if you don't get into multi-room applications, the 2805 is a much more cost-effective choice. the 3805 will run room optimization for three points in space instead of just the one for the 2805. again, nice but hardly toss-in-the-bucks important.

the acoustimass, if you didn't already buy it, is a much poorer choice. all you have to do is look at the specs for a system on the Bose website... what is the acoustic range ? what is the sensitivity ? oh, forgot, the good people at Bose just don't post or publish things like specs... and neither does anyone who sells them  . guess you can't compare them after all....

instead, if you need a WAF solution, you should really look into one of these:

or these:

or these:

http://www.velodyne.com/velodyne/products/ob_product_detail.aspx?ID=CHTSWV&sid=987x523t with any of the matching Velodyne subs

or go here and look for the Mordaunt Short Avant series. you can put together thepieces for less than a grand

www.accessories4less.com

here's a solid, price efficient set:

http://ww1.onecall.com/PID_23123.htm

another excellent choice, where they will throw in the rear surrounds for your 7.1 for free:

Any of these are better choices than the Bose. The specs are there in black and white. :) they will give you much more joy out of your new receiver.

Thanks for all the great responses. My main concern with my system is having the best possible sound with the smallest speakers. I like the Polk set, they seem to be on the smaller side, but aren't as small as the Bose. Is there a set out there that is better in sound quality and about the same size, maybe a tad larger? As for the recievers, I would most likely get the 2805 over the 3805, as I do not need multizone or the d link. I like the up video conversion and the auto room set-up....to atleast get a starting point on where to fine tune. Does this feature work well?

I appreciate your help.

How about the Rocket Tykes 5.1 setup? I seem to remember hearing really nice things about it and the satellites are actually smaller (just a little shorter, barely wider) than the shall-not-utter-their-name cubes ;)

Edit: Here's another 'teensy' option -- the Ventriloquist VT-12 .... only $199 when purchased with a HSU sub ( ) ... for much less than what you're apparently prepared to shell out for that "other" brand, you could pair the VT-12 with a HSU VTF-3 MK-2!!!

You guys are funny, you seem to depise the "other" brand. I work in the home automation industry and get to hear great setups, but I don't know what lies behind.

I guess I'm going to have to goto some stores and check this stuff out.

Thanks.

We don't hate Bose. Bose should be commended for pulling the wool over people's eyes.

(Actually, that should be stuffing the wool in people's ears)

One way to judge Bose speakers is to listen to a movie source with lots of dialogue and little action or sound effects.

Listen to the male actor's voice. Where is the sound coming from? In a properly setup speaker system, the male voice should appear to be coming from the screen. Why then, in a Bose system does the male actor's voice appear to be coming from over my left shoulder.... the location of the woofer module?

Listen to the female actor's voice. Forget the movie staring Bette Midler or Barabara Striestand.... their voices are a bit too husky. Get a movie with one of those squeaky voiced young blondes. In a properly setup speaker system, she will sound like an irritating squeaky voiced blonde. In the Bose system she will sound like husky voiced Bette Midler.

Try a classical piano concert with the Bose system. I love the sound of the Bose system as the pianist moves up the scale the sound at first appears to be coming from the bass module, then the sound nearly disappears (as the cute cubes try to handle a midbass note), only to reappear for a few notes and then completely disappear as the cute cubes try to produce the 10khz notes using a 2" tweeter that is structurally incapable of replicating the notes.

In other words, Bose is pretty impressive..... until you listen to the product.
