So Tommy by The Who is available on both sacd and dvd-a. I've got a player capable of playing both formats. Which format sounds better? I've heard it on sacd but not dvd-a. Any able to do a direct comparison? Thanks.

You can't go wrong with either one. I have both SACD's & DVD-A's and I can detect no difference in SQ. Both sound excellent.

I've got the SACD....one of the best SACD's in my collection. 5.1 is outstanding from a mix and mastering perspective.

While I feel that SACD is technically superior, they both still rely on the quality of the mix/master, so the end result is that they will likely both sound the same or too close to call, so take a look at the discs to see if there are any differentiating features and pick one. Nine Inch Nails released The Downward Spiral on both SACD and DVD-A (DualDisc) and the SACD included a second disc with tracks that were not available on the DVD-A (I bought both), but the DVD-A had some bonus video tracks as well. If the SACD is a hybrid, you can also listen to it on other CD players as well as rip the tracks to disc, another plus in my book.
