The Visitor

I just saw The Visitor on DVD. It passed my by when it was in my local art house, but I saw it tonight. This is an excellent film. A couple days ago I heard an interview with the star Richard Jenkins. He's a guy who you have seen many times but never knew who he was, but here he uses his aging white guy look really well. I liked all of the characters, the story and the look of this basic, simple film. Like The Wrestler, it's a reminder that good movies can still be made from characters, plot and dialog.

I heartily recommend this film also. Richard Jenkins does an amazing job in bringing his character to life. It's interesting to see how the people around his character affect his mood and personality. The actor who played the son was fantastic, and I liked that his character bucked a certain trend in American movies these days.

This film is definitely worth watching. It's a small story, a character-driven story, and it'll make you feel wonderful and it'll break your heart at the same time. I loved it.

What I liked about the evolution of the character is that he didn't do some amazing transformation, but in keeping with an academic guy in his 60's who's solid, respected, but as bland as wheat paste, he opened up a little piece at a time until that final scene when he was playing his drum in the subway station. Life throws out curve balls sometimes and the turn in this story is that when he finds a couple of squatters in his rarely used condo, he saves them from a night on the street, but they save his soul.

You must be easy to wreck. My so called spoiler is in the trailer, on the cover of the DVD box and on most of the promotional posters....not a surprise ending subject to spoilage. What's important is not that he drums in the subway, but how and why that happens. You didn't hear anything about that from me.
