I picked up a bunch of catalog titles from a recent Amazon sale. Last night I tried watching The Running Man and it wouldn't play in my Oppo BD-83. I got as far as a black screen with a little animated man running then it went black and hung. I have the most recent firmware so I'm wondering if I got a bad disc.

Google didn't help. Does anyone here know if there were any problems with this disc?

Clear the stored onboard memory and try again. That's what Oppo is going to tell you too, unless it is a known issue disc.

I tried clearing the cache. It didn't help. I also tried the disc on another player. It plays on my old Sony. I guess it's time to email Oppo.

I'm just surprised to be the first one to find an issue for a movie this old.

Do you have the latest firmware installed? That is what they are going to ask, but they are pretty good about responding (especially if it is a problem they have already seen), so do email them.

Also, try disconnecting the internet connecting to the Oppo. I have had several movies that would not load on my samsung because they were looking for something over the net. As soon as disconnected it they loaded right up.

I do have the latest firmware which came out in March. I installed it from the network connection and it seemed to go smoothly.

I'll try disconnecting it from the network. I really only use it for firmware upgrades which are pretty few and far between these days.

I had a BD that would take eternity to load on my HT BD but the other one by the TV, a really cheap one, much faster. Who know why.

Does it say this disc has BD Live features? That's the only thing that a disc should typically try to access. I don't see anything listed on that disc about BD Live features.

ALL discs or only certain ones? If all, there can definitely be a big difference in how long various players take to load. The earliest players tended to take quite long to load, while most current players are fairly quick. My $100 player loads as fast as my much more expensive player. If only certain ones, are either connected to the web?

My older Sony player played the disc without problems and loaded to the menu fairly quickly. Disconnecting the network did nothing. I already had BD-Live disabled.

It sure is annoying when there are problems with Blu Ray discs. The percentage has been pretty small for me, though. Last night I watched Memento and it stuttered in parts but luckily the movie itself was fine - just the studio and distributor animations in the beginning and one of the extras.

The Running Man is the first disc I've gotten that the BDP-83 couldn't play.

How is the PQ on Running Man? I know there is probably worse out there, but I have to admit this movie could have been my least favorite book adaptation that I've seen. I mean, this is if IIRC, is it only one day of survival, limited to only the premises of a game show, where in the book it's an entire month in the entire world?

I've only had one disc not play at all. It would start, stutter and freeze. I put it in the ps3 and got the same thing though, so it was a bad disc. Did you email oppo yet?

I have not. I have a couple of other gripes about my Oppo lately.

One, I can no longer power the unit on with the remote. It's not a huge deal since I have to load a disc anyway and once it's on the remote is completely functional.

Two, I got some weird behavior trying to play the Planet of the Apes BD. When I selected Play from the menu, it froze up. After power cycling, I went to scene selection and started the movie that way which worked fine.

Three, although this may not be the Oppo's fault: I tried playing an HDCD, Shaman's Harvest - Shine. It was unplayable. The HDCD indicator on my receiver kept flickering but not on the player so it's probably a problem with the disc or the Marantz. I was able to play the disc on my Xbox 360 which probably ignores the HDCD part. I don't really see the reason for HDCD, especially for pop music which is compressed. Anyway, I wish the Oppo would decode that stuff. I have it do all the decoding for Blu Rays because the Marantz can add pops to the new lossless codecs.

This is weird. I had another disc that was giving me problems. I power cycled the Oppo, no change. Then I unplugged it. Now The Running Man plays flawlessly. (After plugging it back in, of course :)

Must have been that initial shock of current that got it running again.;):D
