As I've said a number of times, I am making my way through the Oscar nominee/winners from this year and this one seemed to have slipped under the radar of many. It is an excellent movie. It is easily better than Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon; a tie with Doubt IMHO of those I've seen so far. The subject matter likely kept advertising down and in lesser release and there was some controversy over it (a fair amount of sex) (got that Phil? ;) ) . The acting was extremely good in this movie. The main characters were very well presented, flaws and all, with solid emotion from a very good story. There are times where I was asking myself "What is that character thinking? Why would he/she do that?" and you can't quite define that, but it comes across as an integral part of who they are, not just a plot device. Though only 2hrs, it felt much longer and not in a bad way. Some may find it slow and a bit odd, but I really enjoyed it. Very good cinematography as well. Recommended rental!

The Reader . . . Benjamin Button . . . Frost Nixon . . . Doubt . . .
Dammit John, you might singlehandedly get me to fill up my Amazon cart soon!

I'll rent Frost on your rec. Might buy Doubt or Reader. Hm, will research the titles more when I have time. ;)

Thanks.

ok, the Reader is shipping from Netflix today. :D

I bought Doubt. :D The excellent PQ reviews, along with the excellent film reviews, helped me decide.

Frost is next down the Netflix queue. Already saw BB. :)

"The Reader" on Blu-Ray, evaluation, tomorrow night.

Ok, I got the Blu-ray of "The Reader" and also "Defiance".

I just watched the Blu-ray of "Valkyrie" couple nights ago, so I want to remain in the world of the second World War.

So, to keep with the continuity, tonight I'll watch "Defiance", and tomorrow night "The Reader".

I will be back with my impressions of "The Reader" as a blu-ray evaluation of both the Picture, Soundtrack, Story, Acting and Extra features.
That should be quite interesting...

"The Reader", Blu-Ray mini review.

Ok, just watched "The Reader" on blu-ray last night.

Excellent movie, very well done.
The picture quality is of first order as well the audio soundtrack.
I really love the music in this film, that's my type of sound for sure.

Fantastic details abound on every scene, there is so much to see, it's a pure delight for the eyes. The cinematography is beautiful, the angles, the country side, the old buildings, the interiors, ...

The music soundtrack took me by the ears and didn't let go for the entire course of the movie. A festivity for the aural senses. Smooth, refreshing, peaceful, relaxing, it serves the story to a tooth.

The acting by Kate, of course, is of Oscar performance. The story really grab me and carry me during the full length of the film. Now, here we have an intelligent film, not a crappy go nowhere just to impress type of flimsy film.
No, this is a smart film, made by smart people with a professional team of true artists of their trade. Just check the cinematography, this is pure Cinema. Almost every frame will make a nice print to put on your wall.

So, to say that I really like this film would be an understatement.
I love it, and would rewatch it anytime for the cinematography and music soundtrack alone. And also for the performances by the actors, Kate, Ralph, and all the others.

And for the extras, I cannot say right now, as I did not check any yet.
This will come tonight, probably.

Two big thumbs up from me.

Cinematography: 4.50/5
Soundtrack: 4.50/5
Acting: 4.25/5
Story: 4.25/5
Extras: N/A (yet)

* Anything above 4 is top notch. In order to get 5, it needs to be a Masterpiece (also, animation movies stand a good chance to get closer to 5).

Extras: Final score.

Ok, I just watch all the extras of "The Reader" last night.

I like what I learn from these, like the young German actor, the director, the casting, the actors, the writer, the make up, the composer, the locales, the time and effort that went into the production, the incidents during production (well, actually, it was quite sad); so, briefly, I enjoyed it all because I did learn a lot. And when I learn things, I enjoy life. The young music composer is also interesting and very talented (great music score), same as the young German actor.
And giving more details, will not be fair for the people that did not see the special features.

So:
Extras: 4/5

The reader is a great film, that really showed just how much kate winslet has matured as an actress. I do prefer her performance in little children to her performance here.
