kinda confusing if you ask me.

blinking half-black = new posts
solid half-black = no new posts
solid red = hot topic no new posts

Seems kinda confusing. Maybe it's just me.

maybe it's because your default symbol at the top of the page is half black.

maybe something like:
blinking half black = new posts
solid half-black = no new posts

Just need a different way to show hot topics. again it might just be me too..

In general I do like it though

I agree; if it is meant to replace the 'envelopes', it seems a bit more confusing.

I have to say. I recall Clint stating that he did not want anyone really to have flashing signatures - because he did not want the site to look gaudy.
However I thought it would be fun and personal.
But IMO, these things kinda make the site a little gaudy.

Granted it is my opinion, and I could be alone on this one.......

I was confused when I logged on this morning too. I used to be able to tell at a glance that there are new posts. Today I thought there were no new posts, which of course is never the case.

When I clicked 'new posts' I got the usual display of updated threads. So I too think the new icons provide less information than before and I don't really like them.

Seriously, I know change is generally regarded as "bad", but these icons are pretty close to the originals in theme (except our logo instead of an envelope.)

We've wanted to do this for a while (the forum has been basically standard vBulletin style since we started).

Take what I have (the stuff you see in the icons) and feel free to make some organized suggestions for improvement.

Stars, A logo, letter, arrow, padlock, red/black...

Clint, I love this forum and your site.. I doubt I would of said anything if there wasn't a section called "Steam Vent"

But to have All red symbols on the main page showing topics/sections that have new posts... but IN those sections, threads that are all red = Hot thread with no new posts.

just is tricky...
