The New Hsu Model and Upper bass modules

Hey everyone, I wanted to know if anyone, including audioholics reviweres, if they had any comments regarding the new hsu subwoofer that Dr. Hsu had interviewed with

on secrets of home theater and fidelity

What is of interest is that it has a patented technology in which you don't need port blockers that will lower output when switching to lower spls's I notice that svs has subwoofers that go low however some require a port blocker than reduces spl by small amounts. And whataobut upper bass modules is that important, does that increase dynamic range kinda like having multiple tweers, woofers and mid woofers in a floor standing for splitting frequencies?

The Onix reference 3 comes to mind as it has two tweeters but One specifically for above 15khz which hardly anyone can hear after age 25 or so.

Subwoofer Wars

I presently own two (2) VTF-3HO's with Turbos. Last Friday I received an MBM-12 midbass module. I haven't had but a few days to play with the MBM, but I will start evaluating the performance in the next couple of weeks.

All of my subs are matte black vinyl finish. Though my room is dark and you don't see the subs that well, I wish they were available in some more expensive finish options. I would have perferred that piano black and rosewood were still options through HSU. Also, though the turbo does make a substantial improvment in performance, it doesn't lend itself to "blending in." Otherwise, they do peform quite well and are an excellent option for those shopping for a sub. D. Hsu has some excellent ideas on how to make a subwoofer perform to it's highest degree. He has also developed equipment that is affordable to the average buyer yet able to maintain performance.

There has been quite a few subwoofer comparisons and many threads started about which one outperforms the others. You can find MANY threads on all of the audio forums discussing the pros and cons of each brand. Just do a search for CRAIGSUB or ILLKA threads. Read a few of them and make your own judgement call. If possible, try to visit somebody's home who owns the sub that you're interested in seeing.

Is the upper bass module going to be the new element in audio?

Yeah, So its not just woofers , tweeters, and subwoofers, and midwoofers (ie, if the floorstanding speaker has a sub),

Now mid-bass modules are going to be popular,

Which the question is

How do you set the crossover and calibration settings, if its great Ill buy it if I its an improvment, I just really want to know

In addition to wondering whether to get the bass module, just to let you know that,
I already have a 16-46 pc plus, but am looking to get the hsu because it is a box module and I wanted to try a different brand but don't have a lot of money (ie $2,000 or so), I was thinking of obtaining the hsu turbo. My family doesn't like cylinder subs that look like water heaters lol, kinda like waf

LOL, you do understand the HSU with a turbo might not score very high on the WAF ratings?

You can place cylinders on their side. There's a couple of guys doing just that to keep the profile low.

Still a cylinder does leave a weird impression to my Family

Well, a box definitely is preferred in maple to a cylinder 16-46 plus, perhaps I could save the cylinder for outdoor use, I want to try another brand and heard hsu was great. Someone I knew had one and it was pretty good.

I often hear "get that thing(cylinder) out" from my sisters lol, Im the only boy in the house whoz into these things , well Im an adult now but you get the idea of the whole family being opposed to my Ht adventure quest".

Im thinking of if I get the turbo with the hsu model, why not pick up the midbass module?, I would prefer if it had a frequency respone of like 30-40 to 150 rather than just 50, putting the crossover to 60hz would make it just play 50-60hz range.

Still, I would combine the order I guess, velodyne doesn't have the price/performance ratio of the HSU and svs. I could get another SVS, but its worth a try of a different brand and with DR. HSU submitting patents, maybe it is a great subwoofer.

What ever haappened to those 2k subwoofers svs used to sell with 4 woofers? The great thing about svs is the boxes come in more colors.
