I have decided that a RPTV would be a better buy in the near term than a long wanted projector. I have been researching the Samsung DLP models and I will probably go with one of those.

Anyway, I have been hearing alot about the new HP DLP TV's (not on this forum though) and they look very nice but are out of my price range.

What do you guys think of the new HP TV's? They seem to have a lot of innovative features such as front access for all of the "rear" connections and lamp replacement and excellent picture quality to boot. The front panel access would be a really nice feature for me due to the placement of the TV and the fact that it would be very difficult to pull out.

We have this TV at Best Buy. Sexiest TV ever. The front panel (slanted thing on the front) actually folds forward and all the wires plug-in in the front. All you have to do it feed them in from the rear.

Its a great TV, but it is not a true 1080P. It uses wobulation to create the extra lines (I heard this from antoher member, I think strongbadF1).

The wobulation technique takes a lot of flak. Even though there are not 1920x1080 actual mirrors on the chip, it is effectively displaying that number by creating two pixels per mirror (wobulation). How is that not true 1080p?

By the way, I like your signature. The "country" on todays radio is mostly crap. I just hope you're not lumping bluegrass into that mix. ;)

I don't know, but I bet a real 1080p display will look better (don't take this to heart, bed, work, etc)\

Thanks. I came up with it in an AIM convo with Jaxvon.

HP are the inventors of wobulation, they sell it to Texas Instruments to use with their DLP chips. It is a way for them to make more for less of a cost, because it is using a smaller chip. The only downfall I have noticed on these sets versus a fixed pixel DLP is that at times (and not often) there is a slight flicker, like you can see the chip shifting back and forth. But its not that often, and still looks damn good. But its because of these changing technologies that the prices of these sets are coming down. I personally don't like HP being in the TV business, kind of the way I feel about Dell making plasmas, but if it looks good and has the features you need, then go for it.

What is wrong with companies branching out? I would never buy an HP PC (build my own) and their inkjet printers leave a lot to be desired when put up against the likes of Canon. If they can do TV's better than the others than more power to them. Competition is a good thing. It helps advance technologies and drive prices down.

Dell doesn't actually make their TV's/monitors. They are made by Samsung.

I agree that companies branching out is a good thing. But until they develop a good reputation in that market, I wouldnt get one. In a few years, when HP has developed many sets, and don't have problems, I'm not saying I wouldnt get one, but they've only been in the TV market for a few years, and most companies that are new, have problems with quality. But I don't doubt that they look good. I have heard only great reviews. But a TV that has had great reviews, is the Sharp RPTV DLP. That was ranked #1 in consumer reports, but I've seen it many places and it looks like A S S!!!

I've seen the Sharp and I thought it looked great. the problem with seeing TV's in stores is that they are usually not calibrated properly at all.

I know most stores don't have properly calibrated sets, but I've seen it in more than one store, and in a home, and it looked awful on DVD, TV, and HDTV. It doesn't really matter though, this thread is on a diff topic.
