The need for high quality cables with digital

I have just purchased a HDTV and will have digital HD satalite with a HD DVR. All of my other equiptment is analog (Yamaha AV, Pioneer Elite DVD player and Pioneer Elite Tivo). A close friend of mine, whose opinion I respect said that the quality of the connectors (wire) do not matter with digital equiptment. So he said to get low price HDMI cables etc and I would not notice a difference.

I have good cabling on my analog system and will still run my audio thru my Yamaha AV receiver. Is he correct on the matter of the digital cables?

Thanks, Steve

A digital cable is just a regular cable with "Digital" stamped on it. Cables are cables. Expensive cables do not enhance audio or video.

This is a common misconception. Just because a signal is digital does not mean it can't be degraded. Many times people cannot get a 1080p signal to appear on their new 1080p display, only to find that the problem is the cheap HDMI cables they bought that cannot handle the necessary bandwidth. Just buy your digital cables from BlueJeansCable.com for a reasonable price and you will never regret it.

For really high-bandwidth stuff like HDMI, you'll want to avoid the absolute cheapest cables out there, but don't even think about buying $100 Monster cables. Find some place online where you can get decent priced stuff. I don't have experience with BlueJeansCable, but most folks 'round here know what they're talking about, so give it a shot. :)

How long of a run will you be making with that HDMI cable? 3ft? Not an issue. 30Ft? yes, it can be an issue with high bandwidth video signals.

Monoprice HDMI cables are more than sufficient, even for 30'+ lengths.

Cables from Dayton Audio are of very good quality and don't cost much at all. I paid 16.32 each for 6 foot lengths.

HDMI Cable

The timing of this thread is very good for just yesterday I received my first HDMI cable in the mail from BlueJeansCable.com.

Service was top notch. The order was shipped on the day I faxed it in (this past Monday). The USPS tracking number I got indicated that it left the country the same day.

I stripped out the component video and RCA audio from DVD player to the TV, and plugged in the HDMI. No problems whatsoever, beautiful upconversion immediately visible. My DVD didn't upconvert over component, only HDMI.

I saved over $230 (not a typo - two hundred thirty) on a 6' cable from the local chain store. I'm sure you know which company makes that cable.

Buy from BlueJeans and laugh all the way to the bank.
