Subwoofer?! What subwoofer? LOL.

This is the HT setup. STF-3 is well hidden. Also thought you might like to see the difference between the STF-1 and the STF-3 shipping box. Whoa!! (I hope these pictures show up. I've not used this upload system before.)

Speaking of size ...

Guys, Here is a pic from our first subwoofer shootout 18 months ago. From left to right, you are seeing a Klipschorn, TWO Hsu VTF-3's stacked, an SVS PB2+ (now the PB12-Plus/2) and an Acoustic Visions Denali.

Just PICTURE that Denali in a room ... That driver facing stright out is an 18 inch passive radiator.

RJ,

The setup looks fantastic. You better bolt that thing to the floor! :)

Craig,

Do you have the posts to your subwoofer shootouts anywhere so I can read them? I'm very intersted if you don't mind. That's Denali is a sweeting looking sub. So what do you do with all these subs when everything is said and done?

Thanks everyone for your kind compliments. The missus and I really enjoy it. (Okay, I probably enjoy it far more than she, heheheh.) It was all put together (luckily) rather inexpensively. (Having a good friend at Panasonic HQ helps a LOT for discount purposes.) And I HAVE to give credit for the custom oak cabinet to my father-in-law. He built it to my spec, for our equipment, for a birthday (60th...ARGGGGHHHHHH!!!) present! I only dream about having that kind of building skill. Of course he has been doing it for 80 years.

It's not one of your fabulous media centers, with wondrous things and many pieces of esoteric equipment of true home theaters that many dream of. It's more of an average joe system (sorry AverageJoe). But dang....we DIG it! It's a huge step up from our old Archie Bunker setup! :) Too long did we watch a 12 year old tv connected to 20 year old JBL's.

Now it's time to begin dreaming of those new Axioms or Paradigms. "Dream it and it shall come"....or something like that.

Good cheer all.

Hello all!

Buckeye - Here is a link to the original shootout :
Craig spent a lot of time (after posting these initial impressions) in trying out different configurations for the VTF-3. When he oriented the subwoofer to have driver firing forward, he ended up preferring it's sound quality! Dr. Hsu received some very quality feedback from Craig, I am happy to say. I hope you will all be happy with the added power and flexibility that comes from the new designs.

Sincerely,

There was another, later one on AV123, but their site is down.

I also did a more formal, non shoot out, review on an ACI Maestro

Fine report, Craig. Thanks...it was great reading. Now, can you believe that people ACTUALLY make their living doing what you did?! Gather up a bunch of cool equipment. Play some great tunes and movies (but chew the popcorn quietly). Have the Pokermeister do all the switching for you. Have a wife that wants a sub in her exercise room. Life is good! :D

Sincerely,
Peter is at least partially correct - I did find the VTF-3 Mark II sounded quite a bit better (in our basement room with concrete floors) when firing forward. I also later tried it upstairs on our hardwood floors, and either position worked fine. It was enough better (forward firing in our basement) that it would likely have changed the results of the test.

Why is Peter only partially correct ? That "very quality feedback" stuff ... It was more "Craig muddling through this" ... :p

And Peter, I hope to be on the "first to try it" list for the VTF-3 HO's ... :)

If you guys knew what the "pro" reviewers make for a review, you would cringe. I think they get less than minimum wage ...

In other words, they put in a LOT of hours for not much pay ...

Craig, don't be so modest, I can assure you that Dr. Hsu was quite interested and appreciative in hearing your feedback!

He has had a vision for years now about creating the HO series, turbo, etc. Hopefully we will see something tangible this year.

When the new tech is ready, I will be very happy to talk about why we designed the subwoofers as they are.

And Craig, if you want to be the first to try the VTF-3HO that is fine by me, but you may need to pry it from the hands of our original beta tester (= Dr. Hsu's wife).....isn't that right? :D

Take care guys

Peter - That is why I only ask to be on the "first to try list" ... I would never dream of trying to get the VERY first HO. I have a wife, too.

HAHA! Yes, good point Craig. I can't wait to see your describe the expression on your wife's face when you show her your "secondary" box with curved port tubes sticking out of it. Just tell her it is a bottle holder, and can hold both a Coke and a Pepsi at the same time :)

Cheers

So Craig, got any classic gear pushing those Klipschorn's?

RJ, enjoy your new sub and nice setup. It's always a good situation when the wife is enjoying your new toys, nothing like sharing the fun. ;)
