The King's Speech - Movie

With the holidays finally over, kids back in school, and a day off from work, took the wife to lunch and a movie, The King's Speech staring Colin Firth (king), Geoffrey Rush (speech therapist) and Helena Bonham Carter (queen)

One outstanding movie; beautifully filmed, expertly acted, and a great story line based on true events from the beginning of WWII - Highly Recommend!

It was very funny in a real-world situation/dialogue, not a contrived comedy, kind of way. Anyone who has ever publicly spoke can easily empathize with the pickle the king's character faces.

I will be surprised if it does not get several Oscar noms (but what do they know).

My wife and I saw it on Thursday night a week ago, just before the New Year.

The acting of the two buddies, Colin Firth as the Duke of York soon to be King George VI and Geoffrey Rush as the speech therapist made the whole movie.

The crowd at the theater broke into applause when the movie ended. I haven't seen that in some time.

I've had seen good movies in a row now, The Fighter, then True Grit, then Black Swan and now The King's Speech. Again, an excellent actor's flick, Colin Firth was so convincing that I forgot that, in real life, he doesn't stutter. Geoffrey Rush (what a great set of wrinkles he has) and Helena Bonham Carter were also excellent as the King's speech therapist and the queen. The film doesn't have much sympathy for George's brother, Edward, who abdicated to marry an untitled American, Wallis Simpson. She's a somewhat celebrity/historic footnote in my town (she lived in Baltimore before hooking up with the king), but her and Edward's dalliances with the Nazis make them look pretty bad. If you can take a couple hours with the trials of British royals, this is a movie to see.

Saw this one last night. My girl loved it. I liked it a lot. A car chase and some gun fire would have helped the movie along but that's just me. Seriously the writing, character development and acting were top notch. The London Symphony Orchestra did the music. That was very nice to listen to. :)

What a coinkydink, we also watched this last night, and it was unanimous, a fantastic show. From the Beethoven works, perhaps particularly with the Allegretto of No. 7, I was impressed with the SQ of the recording. (While I will not buy the soundtrack for one mvmt of one symphony, I still would be afraid how much is lost in translation to a 2ch CD version. The only lossless mch format I really have is BD.)

It looks like the LSO has recorded it at least 24 times, with conductors such as Solti, Dorati, Haitink, Morris, and in this case Terry Davies. I tried to quickly google if there is any relation to Sir Colin Davies, but I didn't immediately catch any. Ok, Sir Colin Davies has a conductor son named Joseph Wolfe.

Finally got around to watching this movie, glad I did, it's great! And while subtle, the score sure sounds good on a good system.

Yes, it is a good film, far better than most of what is made. It is well worth seeing.

+1. Great movie. Got a bit of a history lesson from this one. No special effects or great theater sound, just an interesting story of a king and a commoner who become lifelong friends. Geoffrey Rush is always fun to watch, and he knocked this one out of the park.

At some point, we will get to see these characters again. Madonna's take on the era and the abdication drama will be in W.E., whenever that gets a release. It's been withdrawn and re-edited after being savaged by reviewers, "jaw-dropping take on the story of Wallis Simpson is a primped and simpering folly, preening and fatally mishandled",. Edward and George and their problems with lovers and public speaking will be back on the screen. Somehow I don't think The King's Speech will be upstaged.

My wife and I watched this last night on blu ray. I haven't seen a movie this good in long time.

There's a lot of good to be said about this movie, but I'll choose to comment on one thing that doesn't get said enough: It was really great to see Helena Bonham Carter, for a change, NOT playing a witch, a monster or other non-human, or a crazy person.

Firth and Rush got more praise, but she was also terrific.

For non action special effects movie, I thought it was great. I really enjoyed it.
