The Island (CDN version) is Dolby 2.0 only?

Did anyone else pick up The Island on DVD today?

I loved this movie at the theater, and enjoyed it again tonight despite having to set my receiver to DTS:Neo6 Cinema because There was no English 5.1 soundtrack!!!

I'm considering contacting DreamWorks and asking for a refund because the DVD jacket clearly states that there's an "English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround" track but when you play the disc its nowhere to be found. The only options I found were French 3/2.1, English 2.0, and English 2.0 w/ Commentary... WTF:mad:

Strange, is there a difference between CDN and U.S DVD...ie different regions? I almost picked it up yesterday but got March of the Pegiuns for Christmas Day instead. Would like to hear feedback on this though as I will pick it up later.

Both should be Region 1. Usually the only difference between a US and Canadian release is the rating on the box. PG13 = 14A in Canada, for example. Also there's usually plot synopsis in French as well.

I'm surprised they'd make a mistake like this, there's only one French-speaking province in Canada after all...

I picked it up as a rental yesterday, but didn't get through the whole thing. What I did see was pretty interesting so far though. Not to the action yet, so it is kind of drawn out. Sorta THX-1138-ish, with a touch of Equilibrium.

*edit, I was trying to remember the name of that movie it also reminds me a bit of - it was Gattaca.

Does seem like a pretty obvious mistake. Did you check the audio tracks manually with your player's controls?

I saw the same thing posted on Amazon.com by a person that bought the Canadian version.

Reminds me of the Special Edition version of The Abyss (Not the one with the white Jacket) that was supposed to have English DD5.1 but only had 2.0 on it. I ended up taking it back to the FYE where I purchased it. After explaining the problem to the cashier, they ended up refunding my money.

I see everyone says it reminds them of a different movie.
For me it reminds me of Logan's Run / The Running Man / The 6th Day.
For the most part, I found it to be quite entertaining - a little slow in the beginning.
But picks up after the first 20 minutes.

Logan's Run...very much so. I'd thought that when I saw it, and went back and rewatched Logan's Run...lotta similarities.

Yep. Now that I've watched it, it definitley had a lot of Logan's Run similarities. Also Coma. I liked it. Fairly standard Michael Bay action movie, IMO.

I rented it. I noticed that too. I thought it was very strange. I wanted to buy it, but not if English is only in stereo.

When I watched it though, the sound stage was awsome just coming from the 2 speakers. I swear that the centre channel was on. I even had to get up a few times to check. Now that is excellent mixing. :D

I was going to wait until they re-release the movie before I buy it. That seems to be the norm these days. Everything is released twice/three times. And for what reason???

EDIT: I posted a topic on Dreamwork's forum concerning this. Let's see what come of it. Later.

I watched the movie, and I liked it, very much so. A great movie, nicely done futuristic backgrounds, and very haunting themes. I am surprised this movie didn't do well in the theaters.

A resolution!!

So I emailed NBC/Universal about this issue and apparently they're offering replacement discs if you email them at universalcanadahomevideo@nbcuni.com.

Here's the email I sent:
From: #######

To: universalcanadahomevideo@nbcuni.com
Subject: The Island (CDN Version) in English Dolby 2.0 only

Hi There,
I was told that this was the email address to contact in order to complain about my recent purchase of the Canadian release of The Island on DVD. The jacket clearly states that there's an "English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround" track on the DVD but as you can see in the screenshot I've attached, it's nowhere to be found. Only French 5.1, English 2.0, and English 2.0 w/ commentary are available. This seems very odd to me considering that the movie was an English release.

If you are not able to send me a replacement movie (The US version would be fine), I'd like to request that my money be refunded immediately.

Thank you for your time.
Dave
And here's their reply:

Good job man.

I'm on it. I hope to get a replacement too. I figured that a new release was coming. Now I get to watch the movie all over again. :D
