I saw this tonight, and it is really excellent. It's a real actor's film, with a lot of close shots, flying sweat, minimal production, sometimes grainy and jerky sequences. It's also the most stereotypic of boxing movies....guy from the bad end of town, through grit, turmoil and struggle, gets past dysfunctional family, gets his shot at the top and gets the girl. It's just SO well done, though that you get completely dragged into the family melodrama that plays out. Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale and Amy Adams are all epic, as is the entire supporting cast, especially psycho-mother Melissa Leo, one of those actors that you recognize but can't name. If this reads like a rave, it is.

Watched this last night and I too thought it was really good, lots of great performances by many of the actors. Definitely one to check out.

The whole family thoroughly enjoyed this one although the bluray picture quality was one of the worst i've seen.
It was a rental - Maybe Family Video is making cheap copies :D

Christian Bale was amazing !

My wife and I watched this a few night ago and are still talking about "the sisters"-the hair, the fashions, the dialogue! Did I say the hair?!

Apparently the sisters (were they Harpies or Maenads?) were locals, more or less playing themselves, or at least recognizable local characters.

Nothing like a good case of sewer mouth on a woman ... or a man for that matter.

Filth really livens up the English language. I know it can sound ugly in some circumstances but none of those circumstances ever occurred in this film and the F-Bomb rocked. Truly a f^%&in' triumph. :D

Christian Bale is amazing - practically unrecognizable as Christian Bale - and Mark Wahlberg is entirely credible as a professional fighter. His rope-skipping and speed-bag work are extraordinary and his left hook is good too. Sure the story's been told before, but is there really such a thing as a theme that's never been done before?
