The Continuing iTunes-sans-DRM Controversy

<P><A href="http://www.audioholics.com/news/uploads/itunes.jpg"><FONT face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size=2><IMG style="WIDTH: 100px; HEIGHT: 96px" alt=[itunes] hspace=10 src="http://www.audioholics.com/news/thumbs/itunes_th.jpg" align=left border=0></FONT></A><FONT face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size=2>In case you've been in a hole for the last week we wanted to bring you up to speed on the new app written by </FONT><A href="http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;rls=GGLD,GGLD:2004-05,GGLD:en&amp;q=dvd+jon"><FONT face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size=2>DVD Jon</FONT></A><FONT size=2><FONT face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> that replaces iTunes and allows Linux users to purchase and download songs from Apple DRM-free. Apparently after "tinkering around" and discovering that Apple's iTunes adds DRM protection <EM>after </EM>the songs are downloaded to the computer, PyMusique was developed (by Travis Watkins, Cody Brocious, and "DVD" Jon Lech Johansen - aka two americans and a famous dude) to "</FONT><A href="http://www.daeken.com/2005/03/21/project-statement-for-pymusique"><FONT face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">provide access to the iTunes Music Store from alternative </FONT></A><ACRONYM title="Operating Systems"><A href="http://www.daeken.com/2005/03/21/project-statement-for-pymusique"><FONT face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">OS’s</FONT></A><FONT face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">"</FONT></ACRONYM><FONT face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> (never mind the fact that there is a Mac and Linux version of the software - I guess&nbsp;'Terms of Service' agreements don't mean as much these days.) In either case, Apple immediately forced users to use version 4.7 of iTunes thus disabling the hack. Not to be outdone, team PyMusique took less than 24 hours to re-open the back door and continue it's DRM-bypassing mission. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen folks and, while it's fun to watch, the end result seems to have been pretty much sealed from the start.</FONT></FONT></P><p><b>More Resources:</b><br>
