The almost invisible HT, finally finished

Finally got all the finish work done on this and wanted to show it off. Nothing like trying to install a HT with nothing but a 5' wide wall with a fireplace underneath it. No place for front speakers, or a center, no place for components and scant possibilities of getting wires to the rear wall but here we go anyway.

First I knocked a small hole in this wall to see if there was indeed a large void. Bingo. After some measuring I would have just enough room to put in a cabinet and keep enough width for components. Then I had to drop power and cable from the attic and reroute the gas line.

So the problem of front speakers was solved with Artison Portrait LCR's.

But then I needed to get wires to the rear wall but we have 20' vaulted ceilings. I fished the wire up through the upstairs closet into a small crawlspace and then down the roofline and into the outside wall. Lots of blocking meants about 20 holes that I had to mud(usually twice), sand, texture(sometimes twice), and paint. But I got those suckers to come out right behind the speakers. I used Artison Sketch LCR's for the rear so I would have a rear center without having to mount another speaker. No place to put it any way.

Components roughed in for setup.

Next I had to build a cabinet for the space. It sounds so simple to build a box and put it in a hole with shelves but it is a royal PITA. Rough frame the hole, build the box, adjust and plane the box, install the box, caulk seams and countersinks, install adjustable rails, tape shelf fronts, case it, and paint. Oh yes, but first put the sub below it and cut a hole in the wall and find a way to cover it. This way is temporary til I come up with a better solution but it really doesn't look that bad.

No line of sight to components so everything is RF to the base station. You can just see the wireless ethernet connection to the right of the RF base. We also painted like crazy and put in some slate around the fireplace.

And that's a wrap.

Wow, looks really good! You should be proud doing it all yourself. How's it sound?

Pretty darn righteous, but it's all relative I suppose as I have nothing to compare. I have a lot of kinks to work out with Audyssey, but music in pure direct through the Artison Portraits is a hair raising experience. I am totally blown away by the performance of the Velodyne. Another really cool thing is how well the Portrait LCR's are able to throw sound left and right of their position with the rear firing tweeter and articulated components. It makes the soundstage always seem bigger, and is of course pretty impressive when you get things moving side to side. I was afraid their tight position on the sides of the monitor would be a pretty big hindrance but it's not. With the parameters I was dealt, I couldn't be more pleased.

Nice!

Very nice job! I bet you enjoy sitting down to enjoy the fruits of your labor. I just finished a few week job of installing a HT in our living room and understand the headache of running/hiding cables in the walls. Do you have a front center speaker; I don’t see one in the pictures?

Very nice and clean install. :) I'm going to be building a recessed cabinet soon as well. Mine will be going through a wall into a furnace room so I have much more access than you did.

What did you line the box with? Is it plywood you sanded? It seems very smooth. Also where did you get your shelving hardware?

Sorry, I just read what you wrote and I now understand about the center speaker.
The portrait lcr's have an integrated center. The speakers are dual mono on top and are articulated toward each other. It really does sound like dialogue is coming right from the center of the screen. Good stuff.

The rears however are left and right dual mono center because the 4306 actually has connections for two mono center rears.

I bought a couple 4x8 sheets of MDF that comes with a thin white PVC coating. It's called mela- uh, something. You can get the shelving hardware anywhere wood and cabinetry accessories are sold. For the shelves you buy tape strips of the PVC and glue them to the exposed side of shelf.

Thanks for all the comments, appreciated.

That's a lovely house and very beautiful setup you have!! I have to ask though, how well do the remotes work considering your receiver and other gadgetery are at a 90 degree angle to the viewing plane?

Very nice job on the shelves!

Thanks much.

I have a Genesis universal with RF. This transmits to the MRF-250 base which has wired IR repeaters that are affixed to the IR nodes of each component. Super slick and works anywhere in the house, even outside.

Beautiful system! Where is the Velodyne sub located?

Look at the picture with the cabinet finished. Below the cabinet you can see a frame with speaker cloth on it(this is temporary). Sub is behind that, it sits on the concrete floor and is open to all of the space behind the cabinet. I rotated it slight to angle toward the listening position after a reflection off the opposing wall.
