Hi. I've been a lurker for a while here, both on forums and watching Hans and Franz you tube videos. Thanks for all the info.
I was recently given a pair if Mirage MRM 1 speakers by my father. Pretty awesome dad, eh. Any way these things are amazing. In great shape and the sound like they are based on physics from dr who's Tardis. By that I mean they sound like huge speakers, deep but tight bass, but are pretty small. However they do weigh 35lbs each. Corian surround, steel internal box, etc.
However my father had them on book shelves. Yikes. So time to find a reasonably priced but sturdy stand. And one that looks good.
A bit of searching narrowed it down to a few models. And I went with transdeco 32" stands. About $100 on Amazon. They were one of the few, inexpensive stand, that said they could support these heavy speakers with plenty of margin to spare. Plus the shape and design complemented the design of the speaker, with its trapazoidial base of glass complementing the trapazoidial front corian baffle, etc.
They sounded fine out of the box. But I wanted a bit more ballast to help stability.
So...back to the forum...and now each stand has 35lbs of steel shot in it. Thus the speaker stands are now a bit heavier than the speakers. Some bluetack to attach and nothing is going to dislodge these 85 pound masses.
Crank it up and they seem louder than before. Strange. Who knows....they do sound better with the filled stands.
One problem: now I almost need to turn down the bass. It's super tight and deep but almost too much. And from 5" woofers.
Well at least the sunfire vacuum control center and sunfire signature amp I was also given by my father have tone trim controls when needed.
Anyway, thought I'd share my experiences with filling stand with steel shot.
Second thing I learned: be nice to your father...
Ps: I poured the shot into plastic bags for spillage and corrosion protection.
