Television Watching

I'm curious how you use your HT setups. Two simple questions....

Those of you with PJ systems, do you watch TV with it?

Those of you with either PJ or TV based 5.1 (or more) surround systems, do you watch stereo TV in some surround mode or in stereo mode?

T'anx.

Virtually the only time I use my TV speakers is when watching the news. (and not always then either)

Sorry. I meant do you watch television stereo programming in 2.0 or 2.1 or do you watch in 5.1 (or 6.1, 7.1, etc)? I'd assume most here don't use their television speakers.

I use PLII Music mode (5.1) for virtually everything because it allows you to set the center width, dimension, and panorama controls. I never ever use the tv speakers. I personally have never understood the reason behind using the tv speakers to 'just watch news' as some people like to do - I press one button (conveniently named 'on') to turn on the receiver, cable box, and tv. :)

The Denon 3806 detects the incoming signal, so for 2 channel audio signal i have set it to output 5 channel stereo and for 5.1 incoming audio, it plays 5.1 output.

So I get best of both worlds :D

Just use the TV speakers unless the program is a movie with 5.1.

Why have toys....

...if you don't play with them.

I use my theater (projector) every day. We watch satellite TV, DVD's or play video games. Depending upon what I'm watching is how many amps I turn on. If I'm just flipping through channels on the satellite usually just the front three. Movies, HDTV or games I'll turn on all 7 amps.

My receiver is left on Neo 6 mode. It will decode stereo and make a fair 7.1 out of it. If I get 5.1 in it switches to DTS ES (or is it EX). Either way, it sounds good. If I switch the input to CD or FM, the receiver remembers to go to straight mode (2.1).

I do all of my TV watching in PLII Movie. Sometimes I use TV logic for football games.

I use my projector to watch every NFL and major college football & basketball game. We will also use it to watch other HD content like HBO's Sunday night programs.

We always watch in 5.1 surround.

My cable box is hooked directly to my AVR. The Tv speakers aren't hooked-up to anything.

But I leave my digital cable set to stereo. I really don't need Good Eats to be in 5.1

Yup. Me too. My Toshiba RP actually has excellent sound for every day type TV.

I can't remember the last time I used my TV's speakers.

I have everything routed through the receiver. All TV shows I watch in PLXii Movie, unless it's a show/movie that's in mono (there's more out there than you might think!), in which case I put the receiver onto stereo+sub.

cheers,
supervij

I use ProLogic II Movie mode for TV. I don't even have audio from my Tivo going to my TV speakers.

I do not use the TV speakers. When I watch TV I switch back and forth between straight (stereo with no DSP) and 7 channel stereo, but I only have the amp for front 3 speakers on. I guess that would make it 3 channel stereo. :D When I only use the fronts (L&R) the dialog is too spread out. The centre channel helps.

I actually prefer a TV to come without speakers. Waste of money. And it would make for a smaller frame size.
