I read the reviews for the NHT classic 3 on Amazon. Wonder how these compare to the GE Aon's? The NHT's have some great reviews and look like a great deal for $400 a speaker. This raises another question, bookshelf or towers? When and why should you choose one over the other?
A couple of nice bookshelfs with a couple of subs and your good to go. :D

Absolutely nothing wrong with monitors + subs.

My TAD or KEF monitors + subs sound every bit as great and full as any towers.

Most people prefer monitors with at least 6.5" woofers (my KEF) or 8" woofers (my TAD).

The NHT 3s also have 6.5" woofers.

After listening to the Goldenear triton 2's again and comparing to the AON's with a sub I think I prefer the Aon bookshelf's with the sub. The reason was bass. The bass from the Triton 2's seemed loose and muddy compared to the Aon bookshelves with a separate sub. I just looked over your (AcuDefTechGuy) response regarding the TAD again. They look like a better option since a pair can be had for under $1700. You also recommended the Focal Electra's. Do you prefer them over the Philharmonic 3's, the 2's are in the same price category and are like the 3's but with a different woofer. What do you think about the Linkwitz? I've seen the Linkwitz build instructions online and in a magazine article being powered by a multichannel amp with a Behringer crossover. What's your favorite set of speaker below $3500 a pair?

Then add 2 more Solo6 for surrounds later when budget permits.

It would be 5 identical Solo6 speakers.

Just throwing out more ideas. :D
Using Solo6's for surrounds would be an almost criminal waste of speaker talent (and money). Use them for the front three and something like the NHT Classic 3's for surround (still over-kill for surrounds in my opinion).

I prefer monitors + subs over full range towers any day from any company.

I would take the TAD 2201 for $1690/pr (MSRP $3K) plus one Funk 18.0 TSAD Unpowered sub for $2050 = $3740 delivered over any full range tower speaker from any brand for under $4K.

From a practical point of view, the OP might as well just get 3 pairs of the Focal 705v for $400/pr = $1200 plus dual SVS subs.

Dedicated Audio - Focal Chorus 705V Loudspeaker -- Amati

PB12-NSD - SVS

But sometimes it's not all about practical. It's about fun & excitement too. :D

Congrats!

My theory is that many speakers sound great in our rooms.

I'm sure the Tekton sound great as well.

Enjoy! :)

Still want the TAD monitors for my music studio, but also considering a used pair if Magnepan 3.6's in the near future for the jazz and classical listening.

Glad to hear you're happy with your purchase. I'm currently demoing some M-Lores and they sound good so far. I'm interested in seeing some measurements of these Tektons as I have been A/B comparing them to my Phil 2s (which I can't say enough good things about) and EMP Tek E41s.

I think the Lore's were a great deal. I'm getting into woodworking and one of my upcoming projects is a speaker build. Considering the time and equipment needed to build the cabinets for the Lore's and cost of the materials $1000 for the pair is a great deal. I opened them up and checked out the speaker and crossover. The woofers look to be Eminence B102's that are $90 a piece at Parts Express and the tweeters are Audax Gold Dome tweeters that are $115.75 each at Madisound. That's over $400 in speakers alone then you've got mdf, paint, binding posts, crossover parts (looks like he builds the crossovers himself with 2 resistors, 3 caps, and 2 coils), speaker wire, damping material, cabinet spikes and threaded inserts, etc. On top of that the shipping boxes were customized for these speakers. After he pays labor for some help I don't see how he makes any money. I could spend over $600 in parts just trying to build a similar pair and wouldn't come close to the quality of his cabinet construction. The speakers are paired with an old powered Cerwin Vega sub to handle all frequencies under 50Hz. The setup is really dynamic for pop, rock, and hip-hop music. I'm really thinking about a set of Maggies for acoustic, classical, and jazz.

The TAD monitors would be more accurate for sound reproduction. It was designed to be ultra accurate and crystal clear with precise imaging.

Don't buy the Magnepan unless you can audition them because bipole speakers require a lot of space/ distance from the walls to sound great.

I just had to own a "TAD". :D

The cheapest "consumer" TAD speaker costs $30,000/ pair.

I wasn't about to spend that kind of cash, unless I hit the lottery. :D

So when I found out about the TAD "professional" monitor, I just had to own it. :)

The 2201 Pro is a TAD unequivocally.

Yes, the cheap Pioneer speakers at Best Buy were designed by Andrew Jones. We all know that. So are the $30,000-$80,000 TAD speakers. We don't know if he designed these Pro Monitors or if he just "signed off" and " approved" them. We just know that TAD has extreme high standards whether it is regarding a Pro Monitor or an amp or preamp or CD player or whatever. TAD exudes extreme high standards.

We don't know how this TAD Pro speaker compares to their Consumer speakers. We do know that their on-axis is about +/-1.5dB and their horizontal off-axis is very smooth up to 60 degrees according to their spec. These Pro monitors were made to be extremely precise and accurate.

I can say their clarity and imaging is second to none (that I've heard).

It would be nice if AH or Stereophile or NRC could review them. :D
