My Technics SL-220 turntable has a pattern of slowing down while a record is playing. It's not consistent, but every once in a while, it will start out at 33 rpm and gradually slow down until it eventually stops. I've inspected the rubber belt and it appears to be in good condition (no cracks, still has some elasticity). I have cleaned and lubricated the axle that goes through the middle of the platter. Neither of these steps have worked. I bought this at a pawn shop. Is there a method to verify that I have the correct belt on my turn table? What else could be causing this?

Welcome to the forum!

Does the belt have any writing on it that might give a part number? I did a quick look around the internet and found a couple of things. There are a number of sites that came up on a search, so there are more options - just giving some info below:

1. The site here sells belts for multiple turntables, and they had two belts listed for the SL-220 with the following note:
Technics SL-220
Special Case. Experience has shown that there is more than one SL-220: some take FM 22.4 and some take FM 23.2. We will send both and let you see which works best on your turntable; please send back the unused belt for a $10 refund at your convenience.

2. This ad on eBay for an SL-220 belts had a lot of information written about turntable belts. The seller seems to know his stuff. You might consider contacting that seller to ask if there's a way to verify if you have the correct belt.
