My younger sister's birthday is coming up, and she recently told me she needed some crappy speakers for her bedroom ipod listening (ugh...)... so being who I am I couldn't settle for crappy but i can't exactly spend like crazy. The goal was something that can hook up to ipod, is powered, and cheap. I noticed a Tannoy i30 ipod dock online for a nice price... %50+ off new. It caught my eye, as I know Tannoy Reveals are a decent budget studio monitor, but outside of that I don't know a single thing about their other stuff. Anyone got experience? I don't even think there's a tannoy dealer near me.

Got any thoughts? I'm not looking for Revel Salons here, just something reasonably detailed and minimally colored. Something good enough to make getting at least higher quality mp3s worthwhile.

An alternative is the M-Audio AV30 desktop speaker pair for the same price.

I've had Tannoy products in on sample several times. They are very very nice, well built, well designed products. And very unique. Go for it!

EDIT: That being said, the SONOS S5 is the best sounding small radio/boom box/speaker system I have ever heard. Its MSRP @ $399. Try to find one of those used. Simply stunning, loud, & with incredible fidelity & bass response. I put one outside for a client as a temporary stereo and it rocked their whole yard. So much so that they bought it on the spot!

I don't know if that's a good deal as I'm unfamiliar with speakers in this area, but I do know that Tannoy makes excellent speakers in general.

After reading some reviews of the tannoy dock, it seems to have a muddy bass-heavy presentation. Considering this would have been a blind buy it's probably not worth it, even if those reviews are skewed by rooms.

My home pc speakers are Alesis USB ($99) from Sweetwater. I find them to be an excellent speaker for their price (also, they are powered and use a 1/8 stereo input plug).

They're up for 119cdn at the same pro audio shop selling the AV30s for 129cdn. I'll be sure to check them out next time I'm there.

Also, the Sonos are a no-go on the used market from what I can see.
