Greetings and the best of the holiday season to you all!

I have been planning my home theater for some time now: picking the right components, designing the finish on the basement, determining the layout, etc. NOW, I have to venture into unknown territory: acoustics and soundproofing.

I have already decided to go with 2 layers of 5/8" using green glue. But thats IT! I want this room to be all it can and need your help and suggestions to get me there. Once challenge I have is that the floor plan is open. My 21' x 20' home theater opens up directly to an 18' x 19' billiards room. Lets make it worse! As your facing the screen, to the right back section of the area is a bar. All of these variables can surely not be taken into consideration; however, some is better than none.

I look forward to your valuable insight and hope everyone has a Merry Christmas!

Apparently Quietrock is what many theatres use. Supposedly it is as dampening as 5 layers of 5/8" drywall in only 1/2". I haven't used it yet personally so take your own research on it. The room characteristics will likely mean that it shouldn't sound too bad straight up. It's not a box! that helps! Sound panels will likely be helpful but they will be a 'try it' thing. Placing a couple around the room, I would likely go with on the side wall a couple on the side walls out a couple feet from the fronts as a good starting point. Listen and move 'em around a bit.

Looking at the blueprints, I might move the four surround speakers back slightly from the listening point. The sides are actually behind the chairs! Just a personal preference.

I got nuthin'.

But a recommendation for Quietrock to a thread based on homage to a Who song is seriously understated uber-cool in my book.

Ooo, the frosty irony!
