system setup advice Onkyo SR605 + Kef KHT2005

Hello,

I am a beginner when it comes to audio component setup.
After some research I decide to go with the Onyko TX–SR605
instead of the Harmon Kardon AVR147 and the Kef KHT 2005.2
speaker system. I’d like to hear what the experts think about this
setup and I’d appreciate any modification suggestions.

Thanks!!!

I don't know how your equipment sounds, but if you listened to the speakers and they sounded good to you, then you have a fine system. I have one suggestion for you. I would locate the receiver on the lowest shelf near the floor and leave plenty of extra speaker cable at the receiver. You want to be able to pull the receiver out of the rack, put it on the floor and turn it sideways to work on it. This applies for cable lengths too. You can bundle the wires and secure them with velcro tie straps from Home Depot (about $5 or less) so everything has a clean appearance. If your equipment is up off the floor, then try to put it on a shelf where you can move it out onto a coffee table or something similar. Good luck with you new equipment. Is always fun to get new gear.

I have not bought the equipment yet. I was just wondering if the receiver and speakers that I wanted to get where a good combo.

Those receivers should have more than enough power for those satellite speakers. If you don't have BluRay and don't need HDMI audio you could save some money and get a receiver in the $2-300 price range. Otherwise, the Onkyo and Yamaha RX-V661/663 are good options in your price range.

While I haven't heard the Kef speakers myself, I have heard that they are not bad for being satellites. With that said they are still satellite speakers, and at their $1000 price point I think you could do better. Maybe if you could provide the info below we could better help:
Total Budget for the system
Size constraints for the speakers
Size of the room
What they will be used for (movie, music, or videogames)

Total Budget: under $1000.
I would be able to get the Kef for under $500, thats why I am considering them.

Size constraints for the speakers: None?

Size of the room: 14 x 14. But Just in case I decide to move the unit to a biger room I have the option.

What they will be used for: I have a Phillips 1080p LCD, DirTv HD and PS3. I would mainly be watching Tv and DVD/Blu-ray

*Or I can just opt for Logitech Z-5500 and save myself like $700.

In that range I would suggest getting a cheaper receiver as jcPanny also recommended. Take a look at the Onkyo tx-sr505 which you can get refurbed for $200 at shoponkyo.

For the sub the Bic h100 is highly regarded at the price of $250.

This leaves $550 for speakers.

Right now there is a great sale going on at audioadvisor for Athena speakers (athena was bought out by Klipsch who is discontinuing them). You can get LS-500 mains, LSC-100 center, and WS-15 rears for $480. This would leave you $70 for shipping and wires.

There is also a sale going on at Vanns on Infinity speakers. You could get Infinity Beta 20s for mains and Beta 10s surrounds and the C250 for center for $547 shipped.

I think either of these options would be a big improvement.
