System for small room

Seeing as I've been visiting the forum for quite a while, I thought I'd post up the system that I'm currently using. The fronts are KEF Model 105 Series II (dating from the late 70's), the centre speaker a B&W 800 series HTM, the rears are Tannoy i6AW's, and the subwoofer is a M&K VX-100 (all mid-1990's). The receiver is a Denon AVR-2802, with a Thorens TD-126 MK III turntable, Pioneer DV-360 DVD player, and a Pioneer PDP-436XDE plasma TV.

As you can see the room's in a bit of a mess. I've had to move the hi-fi rack around from behind the TV and I've got to get some longer cables. Also my dad is reorganising his record collection and is re-doing some shelving in the room.

We got the KEF's quite recently and they've replaced some old Tannoy Lancasters, which are currently sitting in the dining room. They're going to have to go up on E-bay sooner or later. It's a bit absurd that the M&K subwoofer's driver is actually smaller than the KEF's own 12 inch woofers.

I thought an interesting feature of the KEF's are the built-in LED's, which you can see in the third picture. Unfortunately the previous owner had the 'S-STOP' circuit for them removed, so they no longer do anything. They were designed to assist in lining up the tweeter/mid-range 'head' towards the listener and to indicate if there was an amplifier overload. This required use of a knob on the back of the speaker to select the power of amplifier you were using.

The centre speaker stand is a pile of books. I'm not really sure how to get a proper stand that small. It's probably less than a foot high.

Nice Speakers and display!

Do not see older KEF's like this any more.

I am a horn guy but the KEF's are one of my favorite direct radiating designs.
Very clean sounding throughout the frequency range.

I would be tempted to align the center channel with the left and right tweeters if possible.

Post some more pictures after the room is back to normal.

Enjoy!

Cheers. I was thinking of getting the set ISF calibrated but it's quite expensive to do, probably ~£200.

I do really like the Tannoy Lancasters, which have the dual-concentric design with a horn-loaded tweeter. My dad bought them from a guy back in the 80's. They used to be owned by the Small Faces, who successfully knackered out the original Monitor Gold drivers. They are currently fitted with the later HPD-315 units. Probably my best home-theatre experience was listening to these in 2-channel mode (no subwoofer) with Gladiator DTS track. The sound was fabulous, particularly memorable was the bit where the chariot crashes into one of the walls at the coliseum. That and the bit with Russell Crowe versus the tiger.

No matter what you do, keep the carpet. It may be ugly, but it helps the sound so much.
