I'm a bit overwhelmed by the amount of input and don't know really where to start. Our conundrum is that while we are far from audiophiles (newest stereo has to be 15 years old, television is about to die and the screen has been compressed in the center for at least 6 months, we actually didn't even get the stereo unpacked for the first year)... we also do a lot of entertaining. I would probably live with what we have, but we are doing a new built in cabinetry and the TV has to be replaced. I would like something decent but high end would be lost on us. We are looking at the panasonic plasma tv 59" to start. We own a subwoofer or two which are probably "good enough". We have a few paradigm bookshelf and bose speakers from the old days. Before I size cabinets to fit a bunch of large outdated stereo/dvd player/etc components it seems advisable to look into more updated, probably smaller, preferably able to be completely hidden away in a cabinet and worked via remote. Maybe even just with ipod systm of some sort because we could always burn any cds we have to one and frankly we really don't buy music but instead tend to put on the radio or a cable TV music channel.

Thoughts? If you would point me in the right direction I'll read on my own from there.

If you want something physically small and something that should last a while I would look at the slimline models from Marantz.

Here is a referb with a 2 yr warrenty : NR1602

These are small have great sound and look great. This is not going to power a big home theater but will be great for the application you have described.

and another thing

I've been doing some homework, and I appear to need a receiver with dual zones with maybe an amplifier as I want the family room to be able to play one thing while the kitchen (2 ceiling speakers) and patio (2 speakers) play something different. I also seem to keep finding Yamaha at the top of lists. Any practical ideas on where to go here?
