I am so psyched on LCDs. I really wish we would see those companies come out with more in the 42" range. Rumor is that we will see the 46" 1920x1080 Westinghouse hit next year for right around $3,000.00 That puts higher resolution at a cost well under competing 42" HD plasma sizes.

Oh, so ready!

Good review.

Gene, In your review you stated: "While viewing standard satellite broadcasts and old VHS tapes, motion lag and graininess was clearly visible with these poor video signals...". Can you please clarify what you meant by "standared satellite broadcasts"? I have DirectTV which has an S-Video output. Do you consider this a "standard" satellite broadcast media type? Have you tested with satellite using S-video?

Thank you and thanks for your review.

Just got the 27in version myself and boy its fantastic. The color is great, the black levels are really great, I do think the panel is too bright, esp during night time viewing, I like to leave a light on.

Good, clean, straight up review as always Gene

Wow I got a little distracted by some other stuff around here, trying to catch up I guess. I must say I am thoroughly impressed by the Olevia and one day hope to owna larger one like the new 42in set. These guys could rule the market if they can produce a 50in+ set with 1080p, 2000:1 Dynamic Contrast and 12ms response or faster (if possible).

Anyhow I love watching HD Movies on here and for a person like me this fit my budget beatifully. I am so glad I waited for a few more years for LCD to get up to speed rather than buy a now what would be outdated CRT..

How does SD look on this set? Is your DVD player an upscaling player or is the TV doing the scaling? In other words what do you think of the internal scaler and deinterlacer?

SD can be a bit grainy it really depends on the station, some look better then others. I mean SD is still 330 lines a 480p signal will look better..

Nope I forgot to update my Sig I bought a new player. Its not HDMI or 720p/1080i besides they are upscaled sources not native..

Olevia 30 issues and solutions

I agree with Dawg that using s-video cable with satelite will improve the image quite a bit. The better the cable the better the image. My best results so far were by using Monster Video 2 component cable to watch dvd.

I wonder if someone has encountered this: During some dynamic sequences such as explosions, or very bright light outbursts the picture is briefly lost and replaced by blue screen and the letters Yb Y Yr. Other times, the picture flickers like an old dirty vcr tape.

Any ideas what causes this and what can I do about it?

Maybe your super-duper Monster cable isn't working as well as a good quality, less-expensive solution from Impact or Blue Jeans? I'm actually not being mean - that might be the case, though I've never seen this particular problem before and 480i/p isn't exactly a difficult signal to pass.

In either case you should not be tolerating this performance.

Bright outbursts picture loss

I didn't think that it is the cable. I saw the same with a GE and Phillips cables. It may be that a better cable even makes it worse.

I got a quick email reply from Syntex. Christopher Terry asked me to call them to better diagnose and suggested that they may need to send me a part to solve the issue. Might be something they are aware of.

I'll keep the forum posed of the outcome.

Thanks! BTW, the review was great, especially the parts demystifying the custom settings.

SYNTEX OLEVIA 30" LCD Problems

I've had my 30" for six months and use it with Comcast Digital Cable. I have the same occasional bright screen problem. When there is a scene with an explosion, the screen flickers or I see the same blue screen message. It seems to only happen when I am viewing a movie with the non-progressive connection (480i?). It only occurs for a second, but it does distract from the movie. Another problem occurs when a bright scene pops up, like a snow scene or something with a bright background. It seems as though the white is so bright that it blurs out the colors and makes for tough-to-look-at picture. This doesn't happen often and I don't notice it when I am watching a true HD channel. Customer service was no help with either problem.

And finally, I have had a problem using the DVI connection. I wanted to use this connection with my cable box so I could use the progressive (480p?) input with my DVD recorder. However, when I use the DVI connection, the picture goes too far to the left, leaving me with a black line down the right side of the screen. I contacted customer assistance and they said that the picture could not be centered and that the problem may be with the cable I am using or the digital box. I've changed the box without it helping, and I cannot afford to experiment with different cables. Any advice out there?

Syntax Warranties

Syntax are real jerks when it comes to warranties, they are only good 'to the orginal purchaser' - I got my daughter one as a gift and even got a 'thank you' for registering the TV. Now they say they stick to the letter of their warranty and wont honor it since she's not the orginal purchser- BEWARE!
(Yes I tried checking with State Attorny General, FTC etc - all they could say was 'go see an attorney'). Warrantly clearly states, its only good for the original purchaser.

Tom,

Have your daughter "gift" it back to you if it's still under warranty. There's no title to a tv set, so as long as you're in the warranty period, it shouldn't matter.

That's pretty much standard with all electronics. If anything goes wrong, the original purchaser should retain a copy of the invoice, and file the claim themselves. I've purchased a lot of electronics for family, and luckily haven't had an issue, but if something did go wrong, I'd have them call me to file the warranty claim.

If Syntax gives you the run around after you've personally filed the claim after you've "taken back" the tv from your daughter (say, she doesn't want it b/c she bought a larger one and gave it back to you), then I'd definitely file a complaint with the BBB, Angies List, etc... They've had major, major issues with rebates and customer service as well. It doesn't surprise me seeing their low margins they charge on these sets. I've read elsewhere when there is a problem, their "in house" repair is usually a couple of teenage tech kids who mess with the set a few times, not fixing it, and never following up.

BTW, what's wrong with the set?
