Saw this on Christmas Eve. Not exactly a Christmas-y movie  All of us are Tim Burton fans, though this was a bit odd even for Burton IMO. I knew it was a musical going in, but what I wasn't expecting was the level of blood from it. Yes, Sleepy Hollow was bloody at times, but this one went a step further. I am not bothered by gore or bloody movies at all, but this one had a few scenes that were actually tough to watch. The story is interesting, I guess as interesting as an adapted play can be I suppose. The cinematography is excellent as expected, with the dark, almost black and white palette. The singing was actually quite good, even from Depp, who said he basically never really sang before this film. I really enjoyed it but I'd have to say if musicals aren't your thing, I'd probably recommend waiting for a rental. If you are a fan of Burton, see it in the theater.

Musicals are the same as burlap sacks...

.. I wouldn't want to be in either of them.

I generally avoid musicals to about the same degree that I avoid Ebola virus, but I did like this one and, as a Tim Burton fan was eagerly awaiting it. I have seen Sweeney Todd in the theater so I was prepared for all of the throat slashing. It kinda reminded me of the exploding heads in Burton's Mars Attacks, only in red instead of green. I was impressed by Depp's singing as well as Helena Bonham Carters. The general dank, dark mythic-London atmosphere worked well. All said, I loved it. Not exactly Christmas fare but fun anyway.

Not all musicals are bad...

...
i've been looking forward to this movie. Generally I can;t stand musicals or musical based movies, but there are some good ones worth seeing(think: chicago, grease, south park). I plan on catching it aroung the second or third of Jan (after I see AVP-R(a non-musical)) .

Marcus Theaters, with a near monopoly in my area, refuses to show it.

This is one of the movies I actually liked a lot(I rather hate most movies). I usually despise musicals - but this dark creation by Tim Burton is not your normal musical fare. This film demonstrated that Burton still has a few surprises left in his [possibly mentally insane] head.

We shall see since he is currently working on Alice in Wonderland :) I typically don't like musicals either, but this one was fun.
