So in my quest for speakers i have ended up wanting the swan m200's because they rock so i hear. But since they are on order untill the 24th i have looked elsewhere. On craigslist i found a guy willing to sell an already set up sound system package. This includes a set of new-in-box primus 150's, a reciever (Yamaha HTR-5240 link: http://www.audioreview.com/mfr/yamaha/a-v-receivers/PRD_124253_2718crx.aspx) a sub (Yamaha YST-SW45 8" Subwoofer link: http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-YST-SW45-8-Subwoofer/dp/B00004Y5PA
and he said he might throw in 5 sattelite speakers if the price is right. I'm fairly confident i can get this sytem for less than $300, but is it worth it? As a reminder im in a fairly small dorm room, and this might take up too much room. So i pose this question to the guru's what system would be better in the long run or sound better overall. And what should i offer the guy if i choose to buy from him? Thanks for the help everyone, i can feel closer to supreme sound by the second when im at this forum.

While the subwoofer isn't the greatest, that setup doesn't look too bad. The Primus 150s are good speakers that can be turned into really good speakers with some modification (Per instructions by WmAx). I'd personally opt for the surround setup, especially if you could get satellites thrown in for free. No, it's not super hi-fi, but it definitely offers more expandability than the Swans.

Get the audioengine speakers. They make the Swans sound like Bose, and I have owned 2 pairs of M200s. You'll have to sretch your budget just a bit, but it will be well worth it. Stay simple and go with the quality 2 channel setup. Just my opinion.

well that's a convincing enough answer for me. Ill go with the big setup. Now that i have made my descision about that, on to my next question. What kind of cable to i need to hook it up to my computer? Can someone please link a decent cable to order.

Couple ways.

Depending on your computer you can use an Optical/Coax digital cable, or if you have a creative sound card with no optical/Coax outs, you can use an analogue 3mm - 2 male RCA cable.

well i think the package deal might be out of the picture. I think the guy might have sold it already. So i was wondering if anyone would dare to take up the task of arranging a nice system for me to buy off the internet. Using deals and knowledge of what is decent, i figure you guys could arrange something really incredible for a good price. So if anyone wants to help me out here i would greatly appreciate it, i would appreciate it like no other has appreciated before. I'm looking for something around $300 that will beat most of what is out there. If you could provide links to everything that i will need to put this together and plug into my computer that would be great. Oh yeah, theese things will probably need to be shielded, and nothing too big for a dorm room. Thanks again everyone, I really want to hear what you have to say.

Sincerely,
Devin

I would rethink the Swans - I've got a pair of the S200A model and they truly are remarkable. And they look great too!

yeah the swans really do appeal to me. I need to ask this question though, can i leave a big speaker system on 24/7? because i like to listen to music at night and i never turn off my speakers. Will the swans be good speakers to hook up to a reciever and put a bass and everything later on?

not sure on that one - i simply turn mine off when not needed. and no need for a sub with these at all - the bass is solid and deep, down to 47Hz - which is low enough for me :)

I also have a pair of m200's that I've been very happy with. In fact, I just joined here to ask a question about them when I saw this thread right at the top. My problem is that I've had the speakers for two or three years now, and I've been thinking of adding a cheap subwoofer to extend their bass performance but I'm having trouble deciding how to do it.

I tinkered with the bass management on my audigy sound card, but it didn't seem to want to work (actually, for some reason, the computer crashed whenever I hooked a sub to the thing). I could just split the signal from the card and drive the sub, but I'd really like to crossover the output from the speakers so I can better integrate the sub. I'm having more trouble than I expected finding a cheap crossover, though. At least one that isn't meant for car audio, that is. I was also thinking of grabbing a cheap yamaha sub since they seem pretty reputable as far as price/performance is concerned. Cheap is the biggest issue here.

Anyway, I just thought I'd throw this up here and see what everyone's thoughts and recommendations are. Sorry if this is hijacking the thread, but it didn't seem too inappropriate to me. Thanks for any impressions.

Behringer CX3400 active crossover. I think it's still at about $130 USD shipped. Add some XLR-->RCA and RCA-->XLR adapters and it will function perfectly for integrating the subwoofer with the main speakers.

That would do the job, but I was hoping for something cheaper. I'm not completely broke, but I'd rather not spend more on this than I did on the speakers in the first place.

Edit - the CX2310 is cheaper and looks like it has what I need. I might give that a shot.

There is the Behringer CX2310 for $90, but I am not familiar with that particular unit. I have used a CX3400, and can recommend it based on it's excellent performance. CX2310 may have identical performance, but I have not personally verified such.
