Like a few other people, I picked up a new flat panel for the holidays, I'm way behind in the new audio/video field, but would like to learn. That is mainly because I would end up spending way too much money on the equipment, I’ve tried to stay clear of the electronics stores over the years. Anyway, now that I have a decent picture to look at, I'm thinking of updating my old audio system. I have a HK AVR25II with the hated Bose AM7 speakers, and a couple cheap Bose surrounds. All purchased like 12-14 years ago. I've been doing a lot of reading, on this sight and a couple others and after reading many reviews, I was excited to go listen to some new systems since I haven’t been in years. I'm not going to spend a ton of money and after my research, I thought that I was going to be able to pick up a decent speaker system for less than $1K, maybe for some bookshelf speakers or what have you...well, after spending a few hours at my local Magnolia Audio/video store, I'm very disappointed. Maybe it's all these years going Bose def, but I expected to get blown away, instead all I heard was mediocrity, sure some of the more expensive stuff, like Martin Logan or Sonus Fabor sounded nice. But the "Monitor" brand, I thought at least, didn’t sound any better than what I have now, with the exception of their most expensive $1,800 pair floor models.
So, my questions are;
-I really didn’t see many of the models that I've seen reviews on, where in the Seattle area can I go besides Magnolia?
-have I listened to this Bose system so long that I don't know a Flugelhorn from a Viola?
-I have a chance to pick up a Swan Diva Sub10 for $200 that is in excellent condition..Is that a good start?
-maybe I should start with a new Amp?
thanks, I appreciate all comments.
