SVS sub for my room

Hi, I'm planning on buying a new sub this friday. I'm looking at the 16-26 or 20-39 pc-plus cylinder subs and also maybe the pb-12 plus or PB12-ISD/2 box subs. My room is 9'8" x 15'5" and has my bed in it so that takes up about 5' of that length up lol (I'm a 20 yr old college student and live at home so my theatre is in my bedroom for now). I would use it for about 75% movies and 25% music (rock and some hip-hop) so I want that low extension of 12-16hz but I also want fast tight bass for the music. My equipment includes: Yamaha 5660, Paradigm legends fronts and rears, Paradigm cc270 center channel, and a sony 5-disc dvd player. And currently have a jbl 150 watt 10" sub that came with old box ht system. These subs will probably blow up my small room but I plan to move out at some point and have a bigger room for this system so I figure I will just turn the volume on the sub way down until I move out. So my question is which one would be able to do go down to 12-16hz with ease and also be tight in the 20hz setting and also be able to go up loud. So pretty much I want everything in one sub lol. I would also take other suggestions on any svs subs my budget is around $900.

I think my sub sounds good :)

dunno if it's "audiophile-ish" or not, but i have a car alpine type R sub in a bandpass box witha rectifier and a pretty inexpensive amp that's LOUD and punchy. it cost me about three hundred bucks. if you had three of them, you would need earplugs. get my hint? unless you'd rather not, but there's bang for your buck here, ***self-edited for content***

go with the dual 12 inch one.

Audioholics did a review on that one, and if I remember correclty it was quite clean and tight, and definatly hit 16hz. You should ask clint, he did the review.

well i sent a email to customer support to svs and they told me to get the pb12-plus or the 20-39pc-plus. So i'm going to go with one of those two.

Yup, I have to agree...

I agree, "parkerbender" was over the line with some of his/her remarks. While not promoting anything against anyone, that kind of language just complicates things in what are otherwise, usually ;) polite forums.

I believe virtually all of us who enjoy this site would prefer to see it remain a place where we can speak our minds on Audio / Video without injecting anything that may be deemed offensive by fellow members. After all, we all bleed the same colour...enough said...

Not to defend or justify, but it looked like ParkerBender was refering to himself/herslf as being Jewish. Granted the usage leans towards a negative connotation and implys "Cheap or stingy" but there is a possability that ParkerBender may be Jewish and that the statement was meant to be a backhanded poke at himself/herself. I don't know if that is the case or not but I'll leave open the possibility. That said I think the statement is in poor taste and one of the mods should remove it and any posts (including this one) pertaining to it. I don't think that Parker meant to be mean, but somone could take offense to the statement (obviously), and with good reason.

Ok... perhaps it's because I haven't been a college student in about 10 years and had money to burn... but the human ear can only hear down to 20-15Hz.
You want to buy a sub that goes down to 12-16hz, as well has tight bass response.

Smaller (8") subs tend to have a tighter response I believe then the larger 12" counterparts.

Since you can only hear down to 20-15Hz... do you really want to pay THAT much more for a bass that extends down to 12Hz? I would wager that a lot of music doesn't reach that far... so why spend all that extra money.... I would save some of your scratch and go with the PB10-isd... especially for a 10x15 room. I'm using the PB10-isd in a 12x13 room and get awesome results...

But hey, if I had money to burn, I think I would of gotten bigger, badder *** sub :)

Here's what the Ron at svs told me

You gave me all I need to know to recommend either the PB12-Plus or the 20-39PC-plus. Both have native tunes of 20hz, which will translate into very powerful, VERY linear response down to 16hz in a room like that, easy.

Of course if you decide you REALLY want to troll the depths, and aren’t planning a max output Rave party that night, drop in one port plug, flip the subsonic filter switch to 16hz for response pushing 10hz.

I’d run the native 20hz for max output myself. All modes will be very accurate and linear. This is the key to great blending with your mains. “Fast” bass is really just a euphemism for “lack of deep bass” truth be told. The SVS’s don’t create bass that wasn’t there. If it’s a kick drum or bass guitar attack in the 40-60hz range, that’s what you get. Nothing more, nothing less. The “fast bass” proponents forget that a sub has to do that AND the ultra low stuff on Master and Commander, or it’s just not a well rounded sub.

We make nothing but.

I’d say the PB12-Plus is perhaps going to be more practical but it depends on what you value, in that you can use it as an endtable, put stuff on it, hell STAND on it. The PC+ is much lighter, easier to move, takes up less space but you can’t put things on top. A PC+ can be carried by one guy, up an apartment stairs (just sling it on your shoulder). A PB12-Plus is a two man lift operation.

Hope that helps some? Either of these will just totally and I mean TOTALLY blow you away. Your old sub will find a new home quick.

edit:Just realized that Ron is the co-founder of SVS. I sent him this email around 7-7:30ish I think and checked my email less then a half hour later and he had emailed me this back. Great customer service.

i'm sorry, mostly

actually, my mother is jewish, and i just like to use the description, all of my relatives on my mother's side definitely would not buy something at pier one if they can get it at target. I apologise if anyone had their minds blown, i just was saying that i am more than ecstatic over my decison to put something together rather than buy a home theatre sub, i don't know if it hits 16hz but it'll definitely (i really think) beat any $300 home theatre sub, and alpine and boss are pretty decent companies, also.
