Hello all,

My 900 watt Bash amp went out. SVS has a replacement for it for $400.00, thats a tad steep for me right now. Parts express has a Bash 500 watt digital amp that would fit for $230.

I wish I could leave a link but I don't have 5 post in yet.

Do you believe the PB 12 Plus 2 would be under powered with this option. I'm not trying to go full volume with it, heck not even half volume.

Just would like some insight if this is a doable option.

Thanks for any advice.

500 watts would give you a healthy amount of output. Plus it wouldn't drive that sub into distortion levels. The problem is, if I remember right, the Plus 2 is a dual driver sub, well what kind of impedance load does that present? If it is like 2 ohms, that might be kind of tough on the Bash amp.

If I were you I might look at an outboard amplifier like a Behringer iNuke. Maybe even a two channel amp that can power both woofers separately. I would make a wood board cut out that fits the plate amp hole, put a speaker wire terminal cup in it (or two for both drivers and amp channels), and use an outboard amp on that.

You are right it is a dual driver with a rated impedance of 14 ohms. I do like your idea on the Behringer but the 500 watt Bash amp is the same size as the 900. It would be a quick change out, plug and play.

You will need to wire those in parallel circuit. At 14 ohms, you are looking at a overall 7 ohm load. That amplifier will not deliver 500 watts at 7 ohms, I would guess somewhere between 300 to 400. 7 ohms should be a pretty comfortable load, unless you really crank the thing. The problem is, you may well be compelled to do that, since this amp will not be delivering as much wattage as the last. What you might perceive as a modest loudness level may be a heavy load to that amp. In fact, it could be easier than you think to drive that amp into clipping the output. It can be OK if you understand the electrical load on that amplifier and how much is too much.

Something else to consider is low end protection for the drivers. The SVS amp had a limiter in place to protect the drivers from playback below port tuning, where the drivers are in freefall. I don't know if the Bash amp has anything like that. You might want to put some kind of high pass filter in there at the port tuning frequency. This is easy to do in Behringer iNukes though, its right there in the interface.

You are right, I can see myself pushing that amp from time to time and probably wanting more after awhile.

It does offer limit circuit protection. I think you have persuaded me to consider other options though.

Highlights
  • High power output in a compact, lightweight design
  • Speaker and line level inputs for connection to any stereo
  • Limiting circuit prevents audible clipping and protects woofers
  • Auto On/Off detects an input signal eliminating the need to power the amp on
  • Phase reversal switch allows for optimal room placement

I would look at this thing. It has about the same amount of power as you previous amp, and it can be made to have a steep high-pass filter to protect the drivers below tuning. You just need to jury-rig a plate for the amp cutout and put speaker-wire jacks in there. It's less expensive than the Bash plate amp too.

Just save up for the amp from SVS.

Actually that is what I did. The box is in rosewood and I just couldn't bring myself to alter it in any way.
