hello everyone,

near the end of the summer, I'm hoping to upgrade my subwoofer(E:xl-s8). It still works, but I want my hometheater to hit into the teens. I am going to purchase from SVS, no doubt, but I wanna know whether a tube or box is the better choice. My room is 16 feet wide by 12 feet longe, and im running a 5.1 setup. Carpet on the floor, and well, this square patern on the wall, made out of wall puddy. The room has no reflections, which is nice, but its butt ugly.
Anywho, what do you recommend.

I know they're both overkill, but I'm planning on keeping this subwoofer for a long time, and when I move out, it will be in a bigger room.

thanks in advance,
sheep.

Edit: I live in Canada (British Columbia), and I was wondering what the extra costs of shipping are. thanks.

As you can see in my signature, I bought a PB-12 ISD which has a single port rather than 3, in the case of the PB-12 ISD/V.

My room size is:

35' long
15' wide but with an additional 20' open area for the first 11' in length
8' high

and the sub performs very well. I get the lowest frequencies my human ears can hear. I treasure this sub and I find it wonderful for both music and movies. You may want to consider the color options with this model. My choice was Light Tan, which matches my carpet, and I know that Black would have created a WAF problem.

The PB-12 ISD weighs 78 lbs and crated, it came in at 87 lbs. The UPS cost was US $58. BTW, I paid GST and PST to the UPS delivery man but no duty charge.

The PBS-12 ISD/V weighs 100 lbs and perhaps 110 lbs crated. If you click to purchase this one, at one point SVS tells you what the shipping charge is and it becomes payable with the purchase.

I'm headed to NE Ohio in mid July to visit the shop. I'll demo both of them and let you know what the differences are.

It’s common knowledge that “real men” own cylinders from SVS.

The boxes are good for the mamby-pambies to put a plant on, or maybe some bric-a-brac, or maybe their "Shirly Temple" cocktail. :p

SVS 25-31 PC+ owner here – that’s right. :D

"Recently, Ron Stimpson, who wears the hat of Director of Customer Service at SVS, asked if we could tear ourselves away from the 20-39PCi long enough to give the PB2-ISD a try. Are you kidding? That's like asking someone on the Atkins Diet if you can throw a lobster on the grill after they've been feasting on filet's for awhile."

The people at SVS will tell you that model for model, there is no difference in sound between a box and a tube......it's largely cosmetic. I have space constraints and the tube ended up giving me the most bass in the least space.

Besides....girls like guys with big tubes vs plant stands

thanks for the replies. Looks like im going for the box then. I want the tube, but the shiping cost would easily double. Why can't the have a canadian location.

buckeye, that would be sweet, thanks a bunch.

thanks everyone for the help, and when i get it, i will tell you all about it.

I would think the tube would be lighter FWIW....depending on the model(s) you're looking at.

If you are looking to get the most out of your money, you should go out and listen to what is available in Canada. Paradigm makes good subs, and to some, are much more cost effective in Canada than SVS. Hsu also has distributors in Canada.

I own a pair of 20-39CS+ subs. Do the box subs have the tuning ports like the cylinder ones do? This is kind of neat and allows you to tune the sub a few hertz lower or higher. I love the cylinders, which replaced a Def Tech PF12 sub. They do definately stand out; I get comments every time someone new comes over and sees them. I'll never go back to boxes.

the one i linked up ther ehas tuning ports, and its tunes lowerthen the 2 12inch verison(20, 16, 12) thats why i want it, its goes as low as a cylinder, but doesn't take up the space, plus my room is small, and a cylinder would be more then a box, output wise.

Maybe I'm misreading, but a cylinder has a much smaller "footprint" than an equivalent box unit. 16" is pretty reasonable.

vert.

its takes up the vertical space in my subwoofer location, and I have stuff about it, so 46 inch tall tube would be stressful to situate properly. the only 2 I'm considering are the ones I linked to on the thread starter, nothing else.

You will be a happy man. Make sure to calibrate your complete system with a SPL meter, once you install the sub.

Bet you might be able to get by with a 25-31 and you can ask tell them you would like it to be a 22-31. I know a few have done this and were very happy. My 20-39pci is more then enough and my room is as big as yours and opens up into other rooms.

been awhile

hello again, my computer was down for a month so i havent been able to post any updates.

If you down already know, i was considering on of those to svs subs, and my car and i just aquired is sucking up major amounts of money, so i can go over like 700 cad.

i am now considering the energy S12.3
-3db and 19hz, 1200 watts peak, 300 rms.

what do you think?

Update: This sub hit 15hz 2db lower then its 100hz spl. mmmmmm 15hz bass for 700CAD.

heres a review

Hi Sheep,

In the tests I've seen, the new energy subs have performed very well(Nousaine).

So if you have a local dealer, I wouldn't hesitate to pick one up for an audition in your home.
