Suubwoofer recommendations - purely music

I'm looking for a new subwoofer to replace my current Velodyne VX-10. When I built my stereo I skimped on the sub so I could spend money elsewhere, but no longer do I plan to deal with an inferior subwoofer.

I have a pair of Axiom M2i speakrs, Yamaha HTR-5550 receiver, and Pioneer SACD player (not elite). Price range is around $400.

So far my best bet seems to be HSU's STF-2, but I am very open to other recommendations, as the STF-2 seems like it may be geared more toward home theater, and I only plan on using this subwoofer to listen to music.

Thanks,
Josh

If it is music you want, check out offerings from REL and Yamaha, notably the Yamaha YST-SW800 or the YST-SW1500.

Thanks for the reply, but...

neither of your recommendations fit into my price range, unfortunately :(

What do birds have to do with subwoofers? What a waste of bandwidth.

But I second zumbos recommendation. NHT has some affordable stuff worth a listen! That link he posted is a good deal.

Chad, you're absolutely wright, I thought I was inserting some colors into our black & white conversations, I didn't think about taking space away from the forums.

I'll second that. Adire Audio makes some AWESOME subs. Check out the Brahma 15" too.

This sub may not be quite as musical as some I've heard but it's also substantially less expensive. Being a sealed design, it doesn't have some of the one note issues that you might worry about. It has so much possible output that you will have to turn down the sensitivity to avoid overwhelming your speakers. Piece of cake to assemble.

I vote for the Hsu. It's known to be musical. I have the VTF3 MK II and very happy w/it for both music and HT. It's little brother, STF2, should be very close in performance.
