surround speakers kind of quiet

setup my speakers the other day, got a chance to watch a movie yesterday. I noticed the surround speakers are making sound but it's not really that loud if when i crank the volume to the point the front speakers are super loud the surrounds aren't getting that loud. Using one of the dolby settings for dsp I guess. do i need to make any changes on the receiver?

I didn't run audyssey, waiting to get the app to set that up for the curtain options.

Surrounds and Rears aren't usually as prominent as the mains. I bumped my rears slightly in the trim, but not much. Can't say I noticed much.

I would run Aud just to get them properly set, even without the App. Rerun after the App, too.

If you had a Yamaha receiver you wouldn't have this Problem.

Well
It depends on the soundtrack as well. They’re not all busy all the time. If you haven’t run audyssey, or even level matched manually, your flying blind with no reference to what level they’re actually set at. Due to different sensitivities, they could easily be 3-4db lower than they should. What movie did you watch?

a fistful of dollars, older movie. I will try settings for dsp first, it just sounds like they are at like 50% power. Ive never had a 5 channel system, or any channel system for that matter. Thought maybe sound was only supposed to come out of them when they have sounds coming from your sides in a movie, idk lol

Lol....yeah that’s from 1964!!!
Try something newer. Almost anything from today will have more going on. Also, can’t stress enough that you need to level match. Even a free spl meter app for your phone will get you closer than nothing at all.

i'll just download the audyssey app and do that, I believe you need to do it on a PC and upload the info into the receiver. Just been hesitating cause I dont want to change the way my speakers sound, they sound great as is

You can run the app from a phone or tablet connected to the same network as the receiver.

If you go into the menu, you can adjust the level of each speaker. The problem with doing that so one movie will have adequate level for the rear speakers is that if its mastering was done in a way that limits their volume, other programming will probably make them too loud and they'll need to be adjusted again.

My receiver is on the same network, but how does that work, audyssey to connected to the receiver or pc? You can do it with a flash drive, Youthman has the full tutorial but I didn’t see that. I’ll check some videos.

@highfigh I think that Dolby dsp probably did something or its the audyssey. I’ll try a newer movie and just change settings. So many settings idk which one to use or which one my streaming services provide.

All of the equipment needs to be on the same network, or it won't connect.

The Audyssey app connects to the AVR over your network, they need to be on the same wi-fi network(the AVR can be cabled instead of wi-fi), no PC involved. Just start the app and it should find the AVR (turn it on beforehand)

damn, yea so it's no issue with the receiver, it's just the settings. If the movie or whatever doesn't use the coding I choose on the receiver it doesn't sound legit. I just started using multichannel stereo and the speakers are fine, I actually like it, feels like you're at a concert. I just dont know which setting to use for movies on the regular without dolby function

I’ve been enjoying DTS Neural X for most of my multichannel programming. That first and Dolby Surround second.
If you give it a moment, you can gauge if it sounds ok... then try the other if you aren’t certain.
Some programming has weird mixes or locks in 5.1 instead of 7... sometimes my amps start turning off cos it’s all going stereo or worse, mono through center. ;) (yes, it has happened.)
Be careful with multichannel stereo though, it can fry your rig if you listen too loud running full program through all channels simultaneously. Frankly, I think it sounds like @$$, but everybody has their own jam! ;)

Yea it’s too blended, it sounds like each speaker is missing an aspect of the song. However depends on genre, electronic sounded great cause there’s no sound stage. Classic rock on the other hand was garbage. Just interesting, I rarely listen loud. It’s pretty good at 55, my room is small. At 75 that poop sounds like a cinema and I can feel my neighbors getting irritated.

I am not sure if you saw my subwoofer discussion, is it risky to buy a used sub, at 75 my towers make my door pop like the subwoofer when it gets to low frequency lol. my building is old

I use DTS Neutral X for Directv regular channel watching, plus movies. Directv music channels and internet MP3, the AVR switches to Multi Channel listening.

For used speakers, you might try Craig's List for someone that might live near you that has for sale.

I think that’s what I chose, but it says the app or movie must support that codec to actually get any difference besides regular sound.

I don’t need any speakers, I needed a subwoofer and there was one priced buy one get one. However, unfortunately I can’t have a sub in my system. It’s too much bass and rattle, my building is ancient and a lot of crap is going wrong. So I just saved money and opted out. My towers go down to 42 and my old sound bar sub went to 39, the speakers themselves have greater bass than that single 8 inch. As mentioned at really high volume I’m experiencing some of those same issues with sub just with the woofers on the speakers.

All my speakers are decoupled as well, all 5 channels. Even my sub has a DIY high quality decoupler and it’s having equal issues. It’s just pressurizing the room too much and my entertainment room is small.
