Surround Speaker Ideal Location

I moved and I have two options for mounting my rear speakers, it is not perfect as you can see from the drawing. The speakers are MB Quart QL 80 Balcony series and are dipole speakers. My reciever is new and I have yet to utililize it for HT, It has solely been used for 2 channel stereo up to this point. My reciever is the Onkyo TX-SR 805, so it does have the microphone for auto HT setup. I am only running an 5.1 system. I doubt I will go to a 7.1 any time soon. I do have enough speaker to do it if you believe it will truly yield much better results. If I did run a 7.1 the extra two speakers would be either a pair of Polk Monitor 50's or an older pair of Infinity Bookshelfs.

They odd part of my room is the it is a large room approximately 800 sq ft. My HT will sit take up roughly 1/2 the width of the room and rest is an open area with a table and desk. So I can mount my rears on the side walls just behind the couch. Only draw back is on will be right next to the couch and the other will be on the far wall about 14 ft from the couch.

My other option is that I can mount on the rear wall. However that wall will have one speaker only 5 feet behind the couch and the other will sit about 13 feet behind the couch. So basically my rear will be at different distances either from the side or from the rear. Is there a prefered setup, or will the reciever automatically account for either issues equally.

Any suggestions would be help full.

14 feet is a large distance for one surround. Could you get a stand for it and move it closer? Delays may help. Also if you mount them on the wall make sure to measure the distance from the tweeter to the seating position. This is simple if you remember geometery.

I suggest trying it out first if you can. Many systems have options for setting up the surrounds in the rear. So that's also an option.
