Surround SPeaker Direction

When installing the surround speakers in a 4 walled 6 x 4 m room, do the surround speakers face back towards the tv and fron speakers, or should they be on the side walls facing in towards the seating area ? Most diagrams in manuals, on net etc show it facing back towards the front speakers.
