Surround Sound L/R Def Tech UIW 94/A or 64/A

All,

I am purchasing a home theatre system. The room I am currently playing it in is a 18'x18'x13.5'(high) room.

I will be placing in-wall speakers in the ceiling for surround sound left/right. My concern is due to the open concept of the room + height of ceiling (13'), that it won't sound good.

Can anyone address this concern? Are 13.5' ceiling in a fairly open concept room (basically a 2 story great room) too high?

I am debating between Definitive Tech UIW 94/A or 64/A. They will be powered by a Pioneer vsx-94txh (140 Watts x 7).

The primary difference between the 2 def techs is the 94/A has 9" cast-basket bass/midrange driver, while the 64/A has a 6.5" driver. How much does the larger driver help?

The rest of the room has wall mounted Mythos 2 and 3, with a supercube 1 sub.

Any help/comments are much appreciated.

Always go with the larger one if you can afford it and have the room for it. But Ideally, you want to keep the driver sizes matched whenever possible.

I agree with the matching driver size. However, the Mythos 2s & 3 have the 4.5" midrange/upper bass drivers. Oh, well, surround speakers are not as demanding as the front 3 speakers in terms of matching the driver size.

Thanks for the responses so far.

I guess my main concern though, is whether or not the I need the 9" driver provided by the UIW 94/A, or if I can get away with the 6.5" in the UIW 64/A.

With the open concept + the height of the room (13.5'), I'm worried that I won't get the "effect" I am looking for. The Mythos 2/3, supercube I, and pioneer elite VSX-94TXH sounded awesome together - I just want to do them justice with the surround sound speakers.

Hi, i have the VSX-94TXH also although i dont have the in wall speakers i do have surround speakers in the back of the room and it sounds awsome in my room (i have 13.5 foot celings also) and it is open to the kitchen, i would get a nice big sub though to fill the open area if you want to feel the bass good, mine is the SVS 12/2nsd and it is more than enough only turned up 1/4 of the way.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, we couldn't go with floorstanding speakers for surround sound due to the layout of the room :( We could put the in-wall speakers on the side walls, but that wouldn't look too appealing. That's why I'm stuck with having to put them in the ceiling, which also makes installation no fun.

I think the UIW 64/A's 6.5" drivers will do just fine.

I have 8,000 cubic feet of open room, 14ft ceilings and use in-ceilings for my surround speakers and it sounds great.

Speaking from experience, the 64s perform excellently. The receiver channel level adjustments will help with volume/distance issues.
