Surround sound help - Open floor plan...

Hi all,

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to home theater. In addition to not knowing where to begin...I don't think I have a very good room/floor plan to work with.

Anyway, we just moved into our new place a few months ago and I have been taking care of the necessities and finally getting to this. The TV speakers are barely adequate. My setup would primarily be used for watching TV/movies and some music. I have a fresh slate to start with as I don't even have a receiver. Just my Blu-ray player and cable box. Budget if flexible, but I don't want to break the bank either.

I have pics but cannot post them due to my post count. I could PM anyone willing to help a link to my pictures.

Any suggestions/help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Can you possibly be more equivocal?

Post jibberish here until you hit 5 posts, I believe it is:

Just start reading. One day won't be nearly enough if you care to learn something substantial for yourself.

OK - thanks! Let's say $2000-2500 just to throw something out there for now.

I have attached a pic of the floor plan as well as a few pictures. I don't have the optional fire place but do have the 14 ft cathedral ceilings.

Seriously, I have no life.
Quite honestly a space like that is totally unsuitable for surround audio.

If you have to use that space, I would settle for two or three front speakers and a sub.

Is there a basement?

I kind of figured - I do have a full basement, but it is unfinished. Future project.

Why couldn't he put the surround speakers on stands? One right next to the love seat and the other behind the couch closest to the wall. Granted he'll need tall stands, but I could see it working.

Dipoles/bipoles might be the best option.

I’d put the left rear speaker above the window behind the dog cage. The right one might be a bit trickier, since you didn’t give us any good shots of that direction, but I’d look for a location of similar height and distance from the seating.

Thanks guys.

Wayne - I will take a new pic so you can see what I'm working with. I think the problem will be that it is going to be tough to make them all the same height/distance from the seating area. :( I have been looking at the Orb Audio speakers and thinking about one of their systems.

That’s not really necessary. I’ve always had my rear speakers 9 ft. or so high, and it works fine as long as they’re at least several feet away, and/or they can be angled downward towards the listening position.
