Hi guys,

I have been playing with my new system and stumbled across something I wonder if anyone else considered? First, here is my introduction:
http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/threads/introduction.105972/
The basics : I purchased Yamaha receiver / Fluance Signature speakers with center and bi-polar surrounds in my living room for both movies and music. I have not purchased a sub. My living room is irregular shape and flows into kitchen (see pic) and I have speakers in corner with TV. I enjoy music more while doing other tasks and like the idea of music filling the room as opposed to being directed at a particular seat.
I was happy that my impression matched Audioholics spot on. The Fluance filled the room very well, but a little on the warm side. While configuring the speakers for Movies, I turned the bi-directional surrounds way up. to my surprise, music sounded really good as well since the tweeters were pointed in all directions throughout the room. The speakers went from warm to bright! It makes sense to me that going from 2 tweeter and 2 midrange to 6 tweeter and 4 midrange would have this effect. Additionally, the rears are at standing height, which directs the music well for the kitchen. Has anyone had experience with leaning on the rears to off-set a warm sounding speaker? or am I way off base? thank you. Andrew

If you shut those curtains the brightness may simmer a bit. If you fade all sound to the mains then balance it to one speaker you can run your own test. Also fade the sound to the surrounds with the mains receiving no signal. From there you can see how each individual speaker adds its input on the overall listening experience.

Also you should notice a brighter sound from having more high and mid range speakers as you assumed. Going from one speaker to 2 will increase db by 3. Adding 2 more will increase another 3 db. Add 4 more another 3 db. This is like adding amp power but using speaker quantity instead of amp power. Any time you double the number of speakers in your set up you should get approx 3db gain. How much in the mids and highs shoulder be a fraction of that amount.

HTF, Thank you for the reply. I'm not sure if simmer meant enhance or to tone down, but from the second paragraph I get the feeling that using surrounds for music is not unheard of. I had thought surrounds were for movies and stereo was for music, so this was new to me. While imaging is distorted, I think the overall experience is much better. I can't get over the difference while listening to Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and Bob Marley!
