Surround or ....Rear

Just out of curiosity, I'm running a 5.1 setup (fronts, center, sub and surrounds) - my question is - has anyone ever ran the 5.1 configuration with Fronts, Center, Sub and Rears ???? And does it make practical sense? Why or why not? I plan on going 6.1 or maybe 7.1 in another month or so, but I'm curious about the options while I'm still running 5.1.

It doesn't make much sense even if your receiver let you do it (which I'm not sure it would). You wouldn't be getting any signals to these speakers unless you were watching a DD EX (matrix) or DTS ES movie (discrete) - unless of course you were using Dolby PLIIx decoding or the DTS equivalent. There is no way that this would give you a superior movie experience over 5.1 discrete channels.

Or were you asking about speaker placement - in the rear instead of on the sides?

Nah --- I'm just wondering ..... you basically confirmed my innermost thoughts
....like I said I'm just curious. I'm not even sure about going to 6 or 7 for that matter. I just want to hear and feel flyover efx and rear to front(or front to rear) sfx --- but everyone says it's not aggessively used anyway. So maybe 5.1 will suffice. I'm very happy with my present set up but just curious.

Put surround in rear when you sit close to the back wall. Cheers.
