I am running a Yamaha HTR-5830 AV Receiver, using a JBL Surround Cinema Speaker system (SCS145.5). I use optical cables for my sound connection from the dvd & digital cable box, and regular 16 AWG speaker wire for the speakers. I probably have about 50' of wire between my receiver and R Surround. Every once in a while, the R surround speaker starts to buzz. For example, I rented Star Wars (IV), and with the THX intro, and throughout the movie, it hardly buzzes at all. But with Ultraviolet, it buzzes almost constantly. So to me, it seems to be only at specific sound frequencies.

Any suggestions on what is up here? I checked the + & - on the wires and that is ok. I tried re-terminating the speaker wires to the receiver and speaker, but that didn't change anything. I am considering swapping the L & R surround, that way if the L surround starts buzzing, then I will know it is a speaker problem...

Also, I noticed that the selector on the back of my Receiver is set to 8ohms. I checked the speakers and they say "8ohms nominal". Is this a problem, or should I set the receiver selector to 6ohms?

Thanks

Recently ran into same problem.Buzz in between 190-110 hz while running freq sweep.Found the problem was a resonance between speaker and cabinet. Loosening screws ataching one of the drivers made the resonance/buzz less pronounced.
Waiting on speaker manufacture to send a gasket / seal to go inbetween driver and cabinet to fix problem.

.....CyrusTalon, good thinking....leave the speaker wires as they are....just disconnect the surround speakers and lay the speaker wire down, swap sides with the surrounds, and hook them back up....good grief, how big is your room?....50 feet of speaker wire to the surrounds?....

The length of the wire is because I ran it over to my fireplace, up the 9ft wall over the ceiling, and them back down the other side of the room. But from what I have read, I don't think the 50ft length should be a problem with the 16AWG?

I just finished swapping and testing the surrounds, and its definitely not the wiring, as I am getting fine sound out of the other surround I put in its place.

So I guess I will take the speaker back to BestBuy?
