Surround and rear speaker height?

While I have seen lots of opinions, does anyone have an analytical source to support a recommended height relative to listening position for surround and rear speaker positions?

Is this available or is it always user preference - ear level, +1, +2 feet etc. I am hoping for a response with a source or a recollection of a source being correct rather than a shotgun of answers:cool:
Thank You!

Try http://www.dolby.com. The recommened height is generally 2-3 feet above ear level and at an angle of between 90 and 110 degrees from the listening position. The Dolby site has recommended layouts for different types of rooms, but you have to work with what you've got so sometimes slight compromises are necessary.
